Overview

SUMMARY 

The Associate Director of Surrogates is responsible for designing and implementing the overall surrogate booking operation at the Democratic National Convention. Working with other members of the communications team, this individual will also help develop and disseminate message guidance and social media guidance designed to help surrogates amplify the convention’s narrative and elevate key moments. 

 

The Communications Department is responsible for creating and implementing the communications strategy, messaging, and narrative for the Democratic National Convention. The goals of the Communications Department is to generate enthusiasm and crafting a compelling narrative leading up to the Convention. The Communications Department will accomplish this through working with local and national media, creating a robust digital presence, and engaging with and deploying key surrogates to further the reach of our messaging. 

 

REPORTING STRUCTURE

  • The Associate Director of Surrogates reports to the Director of Communications and Surrogate Operations. 

  • The Associate Director of Surrogates will be responsible for managing and overseeing consultants and volunteers. 

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serve as the key focal point for all surrogates and their representatives. 

  • Design and maintain a surrogate database with all essential information and availability. 

  • Establish vetting and approval process. 

  • Develop and oversee surrogate booking operations for Studio 2020, Media Row, and other surrogate opportunities. 

  • Oversee transparent RFP process for booking firm(s). 

  • Train and oversee volunteer bookers, talent wranglers and other needed support. 

  • Work closely with the Associate Director of Studio 2020, Media Row management, and others to ensure a seamless booking operation that maximizes surrogate time. 

  • Develop surrogate directory, to help the convention press secretaries, bookers, and digital staff best utilize the surrogates. 

  • Oversee the development of messaging and engagement resources (newsletters, message guidance, talkers calls, etc) to keep surrogates informed about the convention. 

  • Develop systems to disseminate messaging guidance and social media resources to surrogates at critical moments in the run up to convention week as well as during the convention. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Experience booking, scheduling, prepping and and staffing on-air spokespeople.

  • Background in media relations and press strategy development.

  • Extensive familiarity building and maintaining databases.

  • Experience with the Democratic National Convention or other large scale events or productions a plus. 

  • Extremely well organized with superior attention to detail. 

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and work efficiently in a fast paced environment under tight deadlines.

  • Thorough knowledge of Google Suite Applications, Excel, and WordPress. Experience with Adobe design programs a plus.

  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills and ability to be flexible. 

  • Strong interpersonal skills, sense of humor and ability to work well on a team. 

  • Entrepreneurial spirit, strong problem solving and creative thinking skills. 

  • Flexibility and openness to evolving responsibilities. 

  • Willingness to be a proactive team member to help accomplish the goals of the Convention.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS 

The DNCC will mainly operate out of the Headquarters Office, but will also maintain a number of satellite offices and additional venues. These spaces range from professional office environments to construction sites, and will require the operation of office equipment such as computers, phones, and copy machines. This position requires the ability to frequently stand and/or walk for both short and long periods of time. Employees may be asked to do tasks requiring dexterity or lifting items weighing up to 10 pounds.  All employees may request a reasonable accommodation to perform their job tasks.

JOB LOCATION: Milwaukee, WI

 

TRAVEL: This job will require occasional travel – less than 10%.

 

FLSA ELIGIBILITY: This is an exempt position under the FLSA.
