The Deputy Communications Director works with the Communications Director and Vice President of Communications and Strategic Research to develop and implement strategic message strategy.  This position is on the front line of representing NARAL Pro-Choice America with NARAL affiliates, chapters and with media outlets, especially at the state level. Duties also include providing technical assistance to NARAL affiliate and chapters across the country, engaging with media on behalf of or in lieu of NARAL affiliate / chapter staff members, as needed, the development of collateral including, but not limited to, OpEds, press releases, and other materials as needed assisting with the management of rapid response, and serving as a spokesperson for the organization as needed. The Deputy Communications Director will also assist in assessing and responding to incoming media requests and implementing an aggressive media outreach program that lifts up NARAL’s campaigns and long term vision for reproductive freedom. The Deputy Communications Director reports to the Communications Director and works closely with the Vice President of Communications and Strategic Research. The Deputy Communications Director is included in strategic planning and decisions for NARAL campaigns, messaging, and branding.

An ideal applicant has 6-7 years of experience and has a demonstrated record pitching, writing, executing rapid response, and speaking on the record. A great applicant is passionate about teamwork, contributing to a positive workplace, and supporting colleagues and allies in states across the country.


  • Manage production and placement of  op-eds, letters to the editor, press releases, and talking points on a variety of issues related to NARAL’s mission;

  • Cultivate media relationships and partner with NARAL leaders in the states to develop media relationships;

  • Identify and execute on pitch opportunities connected to NARAL-related issues;

  • Manage and respond to media inquiries;

  • Develop and cultivate strong working relationships with NARAL affiliate and chapter staff in order to support state-level work and advance both state and national organizational goals

  • Develop relationships with key reporters across the country in partnership with Senior Communications Manager  (travel may be required to do so);

  • Connect on-the-ground organizing efforts with the larger media narrative and implement proactive earned media outreach;

  • Contribute to the planning and execution of on and off the record media events for the national office and state affiliates as necessary;

  • Support Communications Director in prepping of surrogates, experts, and other validators and spokespeople, help Communications Director develop list of “talkers”

  • Participate in ongoing planning activities with internal groups, state affiliates and chapters,  coalition partners, and key internal committees and task forces;

  • Support Communications Director in compilation and development of media reports and talking points for internal distribution and communication to the board and external audiences;

  • Prepare NARAL spokespeople for media interviews, and staff media appearances;

  • Train and guide other staff in communications best-practices and design communications volunteer trainings;


  • Minimum of six years of communications and media relations experience with a proven track record of media pitching and on the record work. Campaign experience as well as coalition experience a plus;

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and strong news judgment;

  • Demonstrated creativity and strategic thinking in securing proactive coverage;

  • Ability to write quickly and persuasively, and to translate complex issues into everyday, memorable language;

  • Organized self-starter with strong time management and strategic planning skills, with the ability to work under pressure and tight deadlines;

  • Knowledgeable about the role new technologies play in media relations work, with a solid grasp of the digital media landscape;

  • Firm grasp of today’s traditional and social media environments;

  • Attention to detail and accuracy;

  • Demonstrated ability to work well with others and to handle multiple projects simultaneously;

  • Commitment to NARAL Pro-Choice America’s goal of building a political constituency to protect and promote the right of all women to exercise the full range of their reproductive choices, including abortion;

  • A commitment to contributing to a workplace environment in which diversity is valued and supported;

  • Willing to work as a team member and to contribute to a positive team environment.

  • Must be pro-choice.
