Development Director

Location: Alexandria or Richmond, VA (position can be hybrid work-from-home and in-office, with an anticipated 1-2 days a week working in the office)

Salary: $75,000 – $85,000 (more details on compensation and benefits below)

REPRO Rising Virginia (RRVA) is pleased to seek applications for our next Development Director. Post Dobbs, when mobilization efforts are critical to protecting rights and access to abortion and reproductive health care in Virginia, the Development Director will be instrumental in telling this story and engaging people and funders in support of these efforts.

With the balance of power in the Virginia legislature at stake in 2023 and access to reproductive freedom on the line, the Development Director will help advance our state-level advocacy, organizing, political, and elections work for reproductive rights and health care access by raising 501(c)(4) (primarily),501(c)(3), and PAC revenue for programming through membership, major donor cultivation, online giving, foundation grants, and special events. The Development Director will oversee all our fundraising efforts and donor communications, working closely with our Development Associate, Executive Director, and a grant writing consultant to ensure RRVA secures steady and sufficient funding to achieve our mission of protecting and expanding reproductive freedom in Virginia.

Who We Are

REPRO Rising Virginia is a strong and trusted leader in the fight to establish laws and policies that ensure real, reliable, affordable, and timely access to abortion, contraception, and other reproductive health services for every person in Virginia. We work with community and state-based partners to connect this work to a broader reproductive health, rights, and justice agenda. In our efforts, we seek to center the needs and voices of those most affected by reproductive injustice and to deepen our understanding and practice of intersectionality and justice, in both our internal practice and external programs. Ultimately, we seek to ensure that every person in the Commonwealth of Virginia has access to comprehensive and high-quality reproductive health information and services free of stigma or coercion.

We are an independent, community-based, advocacy organization leading the charge for reproductive rights and freedom across the Commonwealth. As of January 2022, we are no longer affiliated with NARAL Pro-Choice America. As part of that transition, our partners, staff, Board members and community members helped us to outline our core values and vision.

We have also considered the core elements of our organizational culture, recognizing that we are a team of progressive people deeply committed to reproductive rights and freedom. Our team is collaborative and supportive; we encourage asking for help when it is needed and often pitch in across teams when things get busy. We are diverse and visionary thinkers. We value diversity of lived experience, and we welcome bold and creative ideas. We own areas of work and decisions within a collaborative team. We believe that a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace makes us a more creative and more resilient organization.

RRVA is made up of three entities: our main 501(c)(4) policy and political arm; the 501(c)(3) REPRO Rising Virginia Foundation, which oversees our issue advocacy, culture change and education programming; and the REPRO Rising Virginia Political Action Committee (PAC) which works to elect pro-reproductive freedom candidates. Our staff of 12 is located across our offices in Alexandria, Richmond, and Hampton Roads. Learn more about us here.

Your Role

Reporting to the Executive Director, you will lead in the following core areas:

·         Stewardship & Growth of Membership (25%): Develop and execute plans for regular and engaging communication with RRVA’s membership through direct mail, online messages, and our sustaining member program. Collaborate with our program and communications teams to develop compelling and relevant messages that educate, inform, and mobilize existing members to renew their support and engage new members to join. Oversee our member database and online contribution platform (NGP EveryAction) and donor acknowledgement process.

·         Prospect Identification and Engagement to Solicit Donations of $250+ (25%): Collaborate with our Executive Director and Board members to identify a growing list of individual prospects with the capacity for giving transformative gifts for cultivation and engagement. Ensure space and time for our ED to build relationships with major donors and prospects (for asks of $500+) and follow up as needed. Support communication around important news and activities with existing individual funders and enhance donors’ connection and commitment to RRVA’s work. Lead efforts to cultivate relationships that lead to mid-level ($250-$500) gifts.

·         Oversee Execution of Fundraising Events (20%): Work closely with the Executive Director, Development Associate, and event consultant to plan RRVA’s annual gala and oversee the Development Associate in creatively developing other small and mid-size fundraising events, such as house parties and happy hours. Ensure follow up and assessment of events to effectively engage with new supporters.

·         Oversee and Support Grant Writing and Management (10%): Oversee grants management process, including identifying potential new institutional funding opportunities, collaboratively setting proposal budgets and grant reporting metrics, and tracking proposal and reporting deadlines. Hire and oversee a consultant to support proposal and report writing. Support communication to and stewardship of foundation funders in partnership with consultant and Executive Director.

·         Partner To Set Fundraising Strategy (5%): With the Executive Director and Development Associate, set fundraising goals, strategies, and plans for each year, creatively identifying opportunities for new engagement, cultivation, and stewardship of our community of funders and members. Ensure plans are strategic and informed by assessment of current fundraising activities.

·         Organizational and People Leadership (15%): Manage the Development Associate, growing and developing them as a leader. Serve as a liaison to fundraising consultants, ensuring effective and detailed coordination across the team. Contribute to the strategic direction and annual goal and budget setting of the team. Strive to practice our values in internal and external relationships, and to ensure that our fundraising efforts are consistent with our mission, vision, and values.

Who You Are

To thrive in this role, you bring experience in the following areas and enjoy using these skills:

·         Fundraising Professional: You understand the care, time, and creativity it takes to engage people to provide financial support in a busy world. You understand the process and practice of building relationships that invite financial support for a mission or candidate. An understanding of foundation granting processes and grant writing experience are helpful but not necessary. Experience managing staff and/or consultants is also helpful.

·         Strong Communicator: You clearly express ideas, thoughts, and feedback verbally and in writing. You’re not afraid to ask questions and keep others well-informed with status updates. You are comfortable communicating internally and externally, via a variety of channels (phone, email, and text). You know your audience and are comfortable adjusting your tone accordingly. You understand the importance of clean communication in the right moments and act as your own proofreader to double check your work.

·         Strategic and Organized: You’re a planner at both organizational and detailed levels. You plan backwards and anticipate obstacles. You organize yourself and others and enjoy improving systems and processes. You are comfortable building relationships and project managing with a variety of players, including other teams, board members, and major donors.

·         Proactive: You take initiative and are a problem solver. You enjoy thinking ahead, anticipating complications, and making contingency plans. You often anticipate needs (for yourself, your team, an event host, etc.) before anyone else has even identified them. You are resourceful and able to solve problems creatively.

·         Values and Mission Aligned: You share our values of integrity, transparency and trust; equity; compassion and appreciation; a healthy and supportive work culture; multi-faceted growth and progress; and collective power. You strive to live those values in your work and to give grace to yourself and others in our shared learning and work.

A Note to Potential Candidates: Studies have shown that women, trans, non-binary folks, and BIPOC are less likely to apply for jobs unless they believe they meet every single one of the qualifications as described in a job description. We are committed to building a diverse and inclusive organization, and strongly encourage you to apply, even if you don’t believe you meet every one of the qualifications described.
