Job Title:  Executive Director

Job Status:  exempt, full-time

Reports to and Supervised by: Executive Committee, Board of Directors

Position Supervises: Staff, interns and volunteers

Expected Start Date: June 2017

Pay Rate: $39,000/year salary and health care benefits

 

Position Summary:

This position requires the ability to work effectively with the board, supervise staff, and oversee project relationships with the Center.  Expertise and demonstrated commitment to the Thomas Merton Center mission is also required.  Additionally, in this position there is responsibility related to assisting in finances and operations, including building maintenance, contracts, insurance and liability, and working effectively with volunteers, interns, and community and project leaders.

 

Essential Accountabilities:

1) Board Governance and Communications: Works with the board to fulfill the mission, vision and strategic plan of the Thomas Merton Center with guidance from the board. Provides, in a timely and accurate manner, all information necessary for the Board to work in a governance capacity.

2) Financial Performance and Viability: Develops resources sufficient to ensure the financial health of the organization.

  • Responsible for the fiscal integrity of the Thomas Merton Center.  Responsible for fundraising and developing other resources necessary to support the Thomas Merton Center’s mission.

3) Organization Mission and Fulfillment of Strategic Plan: Works with board and staff to ensure that the mission is fulfilled through enabling of the four focus groups of the Center to be effective and to help the board to execute effectively the Strategic Plan of the Center.

  • Responsible for implementation and oversight of the Thomas Merton Center’s programs and projects that contribute to the Merton Center’s mission.

  • Responsible for the enhancement of the Thomas Merton Center’s image by being active and visible in the community and by working closely with other professional, civic and private organizations.

4) Organizational Operations. Oversees and implements applicable resources to ensure that the operations of the organization are appropriate.

  • Responsible effective administration of general operations.

  • Responsible to work with hiring committee to recruit and retain competent, qualified staff.

  • Responsible for signing all contracts, agreements, and other instruments made and entered into and on behalf of the organization.

  • Responsible for management of technology involved in TMCs information systems, including but not limited to Database and Systems Admin, Network/security, selecting hardware and software solutions.

 

Specific Job Responsibilities

  • Production of the annual budget in coordination with Board and Staff.

  • Establishing job descriptions, employment and administrative policies and procedures for all operational functions and oversight of the day-to-day operation of TMC.

  • Serve as the Thomas Merton Center’s primary spokesperson with the organization’s constituents, the media, and the general public.

  • Establish and maintain relationships with various organizations and utilize those relationships to strategically enhance the Thomas Merton Center’s mission.

  • Report to and work closely with the executive committee, committee chairs and Board of Directors to seek and ensure their involvement in policy decisions, fundraising, and to increase the overall visibility of the Thomas Merton Center.

  • Supervise and collaborate with organization staff.

  • Ensure strategic planning and implementation. Oversee marketing and other communications efforts.

  • Review and approve contracts for projects.

  • Other duties as assigned by the President of the Board.

Working Conditions

  • Flexible work schedule including occasional evening or weekend work.

  • Small office setting with limited resources.

  • Occasional work outdoors.

  • Job at times is fast-paced and at other time sedentary requiring 20 pounds of exerted force.

  • Computer usage that requires repetitive motions.

  • Travel to local meetings.

 

Qualifications

  • Minimum two years relevant experience in nonprofit administration and financial and program management, preferably in grassroots or community organizations.

  • Expertise and demonstrated commitment to issues relevant to the Thomas Merton Center mission.
