HOURS:

Part time, approximately 10 hours per week (dependent on intern’s schedule)

COMPENSATION:

Compensation is provided for applicants who are unable to secure outside funding. A monthly MetroCard will be provided.

SUMMARY:

The National Institute for Reproductive Health promotes reproductive rights and expands access to reproductive health care in New York and in cities and states across the country. The National Institute for Reproductive Health works through a partnership model in cities and states across the U.S. to promote a proactive and unapologetic approach to reproductive health, rights, and justice. Through strategic risk-taking and a focus on long-term change, the National Institute galvanizes public support, changes public policy, and expands access to reproductive health care, with a specific focus on abortion. By building connections between and among partner organizations, developing proactive policy strategies, and providing capacity-building assistance, we are strengthening local and state movements, and thus shifting the culture on the national level.

The law clerk/legal intern should expect to engage in policy analysis of key pieces of state legislation across the country; perform legal research and draft legal memoranda to advance our policy priorities; and gain experience working in state and national coalitions working to advance reproductive rights.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

          Policy analysis of bills affecting reproductive rights on the state level;

          Legislative tracking of related bills in key states;

          Legal research and writing.

QUALIFICATIONS:

          Current law student;

          A commitment to and knowledge of reproductive health and rights is preferred but not required;

          Excellent legal research and writing skills;

          Knowledge of and/or interest in the legislative process;

          Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, including exceptional attention to detail; and

          Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
