Job Classification: Police Officer Recruit and/or Lateral

The Gervais Police Department is currently hiring for recruit and/or lateral Police Officers. This is an open/continuous process and the recruitment can be closed at any time.

All recruit candidates must take the FrontLine National Test and have a valid passing ORPAT within one year of your application date. Lateral Officers need to only complete an application with the City of Gervais. The position will remain open until filled. A hiring list will also be established for future openings.

Recruit applicants are responsible for contacting NTN and arranging for their testing. If you have completed the ORPAT with another department, you may submit your results on department letterhead with your application.

Salary Information:  $27.21 – $40.20 hr.

Additional generous incentive pays are available: 

Associates/Intermediate DPSST 2% of base wage

Bachelor/Advanced DPSST 4% of base wage

Bi-lingual (Spanish) Differential 7% of base wage

FTO 5% of base wage

Lead Officer 2.5% of base wage

Benefits Information: An attractive benefits package is provided, including medical, dental, vision, and life insurance.  The City pays 90% of the insurance premium for the employee and dependents. The City makes a monthly contribution to an employee’s Health Reimbursement Account (HRA).  This is a PERS position with a 6% employee share paid by the City. The City also offers a 457 deferred compensation plan (employee-funded). Employees receive paid vacation and sick leave as well as paid holidays, depending on their work schedule.

Department Overview: The dedicated professionals of the Gervais Police Department serve a population of about 2500 residents. Our staff includes five sworn police officers and one civilian staff member. The members of the Gervais Police Department are exceptional people who passionately care about their community and enriching the lives of the people they serve.

Area Information: We are just 13 miles north of Salem and 30 miles south of Portland, located in the heart of Oregon’s Willamette Valley. We are surrounded by rich farmland and provide a truly small town feel with the benefits being a short drive to all the big city amenities.

Job Requirements
Age: 21 years of age

Citizenship Required: Must be a US Citizen within 18 months of the date of hire.

High School Grad/GED: High School diploma or G.E.D

Valid OREGON Driver’s License: Must have valid Driver’s license at time of hire.

Ability to Read/Speak English: Must be able to read and speak the English Language. Bi-lingual is preferred.

Vision: Visual and Hearing Acuity: Must meet the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training requirements as detailed in Oregon Administrative Rules (OARs) 259-¬008¬0000,

Necessary Certifications: Must be able to be certified as a Police Officer by the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training.

Specific Disqualifiers/Behaviors: No Felony, Criminal Activity, Driving records, Drug Use, Poor Employment, Poor Financial or Additional Disqualifiers: Gervais uses a complex matrix system to be utilized during the initial screening and detailed background investigation to determine eligibility for hire.

Driving Disqualifiers: Must have an acceptable driving record and the ability to obtain a valid driver’s license.

Qualifications: The ideal candidate has additional knowledge of:

Federal, state, county, and City laws, regulations, and ordinances.
Criminal behavior causes underlying criminality and the social, psychological, and physical needs of criminals.

Standard police practices, methods, and procedures.
Safety standards, procedures, and precautions utilized in police activities. – Methods of investigation, apprehension, and rules of evidence.
Basic first aid and CPR procedures.
The safe and appropriate use of firearms and other police-related tools.
Passion for developing positive police-school relationships.

Ability to: Apply principles and techniques of modern crime prevention, investigation, apprehension, rules of evidence, and all other aspects of law enforcement.

Skillfully and safely use firearms and other police-related tools. – Physically handle persons resisting arrest.

Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Read and comprehend complex laws, ordinances, plans, and orders.
Maintain composure under adverse conditions such as public harassment, critical injuries, and death.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, officials, and citizens from a variety of racial, ethnic, and economic backgrounds.
Analyze situations quickly and objectively to recognize actual and potential dangerous situations, and to determine proper course of action.

Present evidence in court effectively; skill in observation and remembering details such as names, faces, and incidents.

Physical ability to perform the essential functions of the job.

Minimum Qualifications for this position: High School diploma or G.E.D and 21 years of age by date of hire

  • Ability to pass a comprehensive background investigation
  • Ability to pass a psychological, medical, and drug screen exam

Position Description: Police Officers provide emergency aid, security, and protection of life and property for the citizens of Gervais by patrolling business, rural, and residential areas. They respond to requests for information and assistance, investigate criminal activity, subdue combative suspects, make arrests, work with people to solve problems associated with crime and neighborhood problems, and ensure proper enforcement of laws and regulations.
