Overview

Media Matters for America—a progressive, Washington, D.C.-based, nonprofit research and information center dedicated to comprehensively monitoring, analyzing, and correcting conservative misinformation in the U.S. media—seeks a Senior Writer for its Research and Engagement Department.

 

ROLE SUMMARY:

The Senior Writer is primarily responsible for providing rapid response media coverage, generating research and content ideas, and writing and editing content.

 

REPORTING STRUCTURE:

  • The Senior Writer reports to the News Director  

 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Rapid response: The Senior Writer will create rapid response content on a daily basis aimed at correcting conservative misinformation in the media. This content will range from fact checks to data-driven analysis. The ideal candidate would be able to draw on a deep understanding of the news cycle and social media to identify and execute impactful content.

 

SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Investigative research: The Senior Writer will conduct in-depth research into media coverage trends and overlooked stories for pieces that would work outside of a rapid response moment.

 

  • Essay writing: From time to time, the Senior Writer will produce longer feature-length stories to tie narratives together.

 

  • Editing: From time to time, the Senior Writer will help edit posts and internal documents written by others on staff, recommending substantive improvements, fact-checking, and adjusting language as necessary to produce clean, clear, and effective written material.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  • 3+ years of experience in media, research, journalism, or a related field.

  • Strong writing ability, strong editing ability, and clear communication style. 

  • Deep understanding of the effects of conservative misinformation on public debate.

  • Knowledge of and keen interest in a wide range of issues.

  • Familiarity with print, broadcast, and online media trends, and working knowledge of journalistic ethics and newsroom practices.

  • Ability to generate creative ideas and execute them in a tight window. 

  • Ability to take initiative and work on multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment under tight deadlines. Strong independent work ethic a must.

  • Social media savvy and an understanding of the role of social media in disseminating information. 

  • Comfort in a fast-evolving digital space, including learning to use new software and research tools. 

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

 

  • Experience producing online content on deadline, including multimedia content.  

  • Experience fact-checking. 

  • Research and analysis skills, including ability to use Nexis, scholarly databases, and Excel.
