Job Description:

SUMMARY

This is supervisory and technical work scheduling, planning, and coordinating all related activities of custodial services for Facilities Management within the Public Works Department.

The single position allocated to this classification reports to a designated supervisor and works under general supervision. Work in this class is distinguished from other classes by its emphasis on supervisory responsibilities related to custodial operations.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Responsible for coordinating daily workflow and staff supervision within area.

Organize, assign, and manage workflow for routine, special cleaning tasks, and ensure emergency responses are handled in a timely manner, manage immediate needs received by work orders, building reports, or customers.

Provide supervision to a team of custodial workers who perform custodial tasks, including sweeping and mopping floors, cleaning restrooms and replenishing supplies, removal and disposal of trash, cleaning ceiling tiles and vents, cleaning windows and walls, vacuuming and shampooing carpets, and other interior cleaning tasks as required.

Provide training, continuing education, and guidance for staff on position expectations, safe use of equipment and cleaning supplies; ensure staff follow prescribed cleaning methods and procedures.

Coordinate and ensure completion of cleaning tasks at exterior areas adjacent to the building; areas maintained include offices, hallways, windows, railings, entrance areas, and similar exterior surfaces; cleaning tasks include sweeping.

Coordinate and ensure completion of heavy cleaning tasks including stripping, sealing, and waxing of hard surface floors, including moving furniture; record the condition and cleaning schedules for hard surface floors and carpets.

Assist with coordination and ensure completion of special cleaning tasks for General Government Facilities.

Ensure compliance with safety standards, and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) regulations at all times.

Provides to employees all supplies with the proper PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) needed to satisfactorily complete assigned work.

Responsible for quality assurance and building inspections.

Conduct daily inspections of designated areas to ensure that highest levels of cleanliness, sanitation, overall condition, and appearances are achieved and maintained (APPA level 2 standard), document items requiring attention; ensure deficiencies are corrected in a timely manner.

Provide direct reports with corrective dates for all inspections and establish corrective dates for all areas.

Investigate and respond appropriately to requests from building occupants and customers regarding building custodial needs.

Inspect custodial equipment regularly, ensuring proper sanitation and maintenance of equipment; assist in maintaining up-to-date equipment usage.

Provide general support for assigned area and administrative support as directed.

Assist with employee hiring processes and orientation for new employees.

Review employee time records for accuracy, verify accuracy of leave request forms, and time entered for payroll; track attendance and counsel employees as needed regarding attendance policies; responsible for custodial employee engaged check-ins for designated employees.

Respond to personnel issues as needed; keep supervisor informed in a timely manner regarding issues; conduct counseling and disciplinary meetings or other follow-up with staff as directed.

Maintain inventory of cleaning materials, tools, equipment, and restroom supplies in storage closets throughout the facility, place orders for supplies and materials as needed.

Assist with coordination of demonstrations and instruction by vendors on cleaning methods, products, and proper use of equipment.

Assist in maintaining safety data (SDS) notebook; assist with regular reviews of custodial staff on SDS information.

Maintain positive relationships with staff (internal and external) and vendors to support the mission of Facilities Management.

Perform housekeeping/custodial duties (as needed).

Responsible for performing custodial tasks including sweeping and mopping floors, cleaning restrooms and replenishing supplies, removal and disposal of trash, cleaning ceiling tiles and vents, cleaning windows and walls, vacuuming and shampooing carpets, and other interior cleaning tasks.

Responsible for performing heavy cleaning tasks including shipping, sealing, and waxing of hard surface floors, including moving furniture.

Perform occasional room set-up and/or breakdown (including moving furniture) as directed for scheduled events as needed.

Develop reports, handle special projects, tasks, and other duties as assigned.

Attends work on a continuous and regular basis.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Graduation from an accredited high school and five (5) years of progressively more responsible work experience in facilities, including three (3) years of supervisory experience, preferably in a municipal government environment.

Demonstrated experience training, leading, and supervising a staff.
