Job Description:

SUMMARY

This is responsible para-professional work overseeing the development of youth and adult participants who are at high risk of victimization by or engagement in community-based violence within Alachua County to succeed at school, home, and work and in the community through education and life skills development.

Positions allocated to this classification report to Gainesville Fire Rescue Community Health Division and work under close supervision. Work in this entry level classification is distinguished from the senior level classification by receiving on-the-job and basic in-service training needed to case manage and counsel participants and provide the education and life skills needed for each assigned participant to be successful.

This position will work with program participants to increase their ability to achieve their desired goals through engagement in or referrals to mentoring, educational services, continuing education programs, apprenticeships, employment readiness, and social service agencies, including Gainesville Fire Resource Community Resource Paramedicine Program to address unmet health needs. This position may be placed on assignment to work under the supervision of the B.O.L.D. Program and IMPACT GNV gun violence prevention initiatives.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Provides supervision and case management for youth and adult participants engaging in services within Gainesville Fire Rescue Community Health Division, which includes the B.O.L.D. Program and IMPACT GNV Gun Violence Prevention.

Educates and inspires youth participants by promoting a healthy and drug-free lifestyle through instructional and adventurous activities.

Conducts fact finding interviews; develops and monitors individual case plans.

Coordinates case assignments for multi-needs participants.

Provides referrals for counseling and family services when appropriate.

Provides age-appropriate educational enrichment training to prepare for success in school, the workforce, and/or prepare for college.

Provides age-appropriate job readiness training, including resume writing and interview skills.

Provides recreational and physical education activities to promote wellness and social skills in partnership with the Gainesville Police Athletics League and other community-based partners and organizations.

Provides skill-building and conflict resolution training to prepare participants for success towards their individual goals and case plans. Instills a sense of belonging in the participant through multi-cultural experiences provided in the community, at school, with family and/or program unit.

Ensures a safe and secure environment for participants, staff, and volunteers.

May Transport participants to program activities; and after the program, transports participants to their homes or as otherwise directed.

Completes weekly status reports regarding unit performance and vehicle inspections.

Attends work on a continuous and regular basis.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Have Graduated from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma and two (2) years of more responsible youth services work or volunteer experience, such as YMCA, Boys and Girls Club, schools, recreational facilities, and other youth services-oriented facilities.

OR an associate degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in business administration, public administration, education, family social science, physical education, psychology, sociology, social work or related area; and one (1) years of youth services work or volunteer experience, such as YMCA, Boys and Girls Club, schools, recreational facilities, and other youth services-oriented facilities.

OR A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in business administration, public administration, education, family social science, physical education, psychology, sociology, social work or related area; and some youth services work or volunteer experience, such as YMCA, Boys and Girls Club, schools, recreational facilities, and other youth services-oriented facilities.

OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

CERTIFICATIONS OR LICENSES

Licenses

Valid Driver License required at time of appointment, and Florida Driver License within 30 days.

Certifications

American Red Cross certification (or equivalent) in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and First Aid is required upon appointment.

Handle with Care® certification in behavior management and safe physical intervention is required within twelve (12) months of appointment.
