Position Title: Firefighter/Paramedic

The Villa Park Fire Department is hiring for the position of Firefighter/Paramedic. There are three immediate vacancies. Candidates are required to complete the NTN FireTeam exam, PSSA & PHQ by the application deadline of August 2, 2024. The first round of applications will be processed on August 2, 2024, but candidates are welcome to continue applying after that date for future lists to fit the Department’s needs.

Salary Information: $75,887-$105,507

Department Overview:

The Fire Department’s authorized staffing level consists of a Fire Chief, a Deputy Fire Chief, an administrative assistant, 21 firefighter paramedics, six lieutenant paramedics, one part-time fire inspector, and part-time single-role paramedics. We currently have three full-time vacancies in the department due to retirements, we are currently establishing a hiring eligibility list to fill these vacancies.

Being a smaller department allows our members an opportunity to be more involved in the day-to-day operations. Our members are encouraged and empowered to have extra duties beyond being a Firefighter/Paramedic. We are an all-hazard department that embraces a culture that encourages training and personal & professional development. Our comprehensive training program assures that our members stay proficient in their current positions while also being prepared for future promotions.

The Villa Park Fire Department responded to over 3200 calls in 2023 and is a member of MABAS division 12. We currently have two or more members that represent the Villa Park Fire Department on each of the specialty teams in the division, including Hazardous Materials, Technical Rescue, and Swift/Ice/Dive Rescue.  Villa Park also supports multiple Fire Investigators and two Du Page County Fire Investigation Task Force members.

Job Requirements

  • Completed Personal History Questionnaire (PHQ) through NTN
  • Valid State Issued Driver’s License
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Copy of Birth Certificate as Proof of Citizenship (the following documents are accepted, with only one needed) COPY of U.S. County/State-Issued

  • COPY of Naturalization Papers
  • Hospital-issued birth certificates are not accepted
  • IDPH or National Registry Paramedic License If currently in Paramedic School, then a letter from the Lead Instructor indicating expected graduation date is needed.
  • CPAT: Proof of successfully passing.
  • Must have completed the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) and Ladder Climb Exercise within one year before the written exam deadline (8/02/2024). Certifications are considered valid if issued 08/02/2023-08/02/2024

Hiring Process:

Candidates receiving an offer of employment must successfully pass the online testing portion and participate in a pass/fail oral interview.  Further candidate testing will include an FBI Fingerprinting Check, Background Investigation, and Polygraph. After completing the aforementioned, the candidate will receive a conditional offer of employment based on passing a Psychological Exam and an In-depth Pre-Employment Medical Exam.

Eligible Candidates can submit Preference Points in person to the Villa Park Fire Department Headquarters located at 1440 S. After ten (10) days, the Final Eligibility List will be posted.

Points will be awarded as follows:

MILITARY PREFERENCE – 5 points awarded to applicants who have served a minimum of 12 months on active duty in the service of the U.S. Military and who have either been honorably discharged or, in lieu of an honorable discharge, are still serving in an active or inactive reserve status.
EDUCATION (Accredited College or University) Associate degree – 2.5 points OR
Associate degree in Fire Science or Emergency Medical Services from an accredited

Community or Junior College or a bachelor’s degree in any field from an accredited College or University – 5 points

EXPERIENCE POINTS— 1 point per year up to five (5) years (candidates who currently work as a part-time Firefighter/Paramedic with the Villa Park Fire Department).

RESIDENCY POINTS- 1 point per year, up to five (5) years. Candidates who currently live in the Village of Villa Park and have resided there for at least one year will receive points. ____ years x 1 =_____ points

ADDITIONAL POINTSTo qualify, applicants shall be certified by the Illinois Office of State Fire Marshall (OSFM) as a Firefighter II, Basic or Advanced. – 5 points.

Note: Points in “A” and “B” are not cumulative. Points in “C-E” are applied unless it would place a candidate ahead of a veteran on the eligibility list. Documentation is required with this application.
