Girls Not Brides is the only global organisation uniquely focused on creating and sustaining a worldwide movement to end child marriage and ensuring that this movement leads to tangible change for the girls at risk or affected by the practice. We are a network of over 1,600 civil society organisations in over 100 countries working in partnership to end child marriage.

INTRODUCTION TO THE ROLE

We are seeking an enthusiastic, dynamic, and bold individual who believes in the power of global advocacy and campaigns to deliver change and one who shares our vision of a world free of child marriage, where girls and women enjoy equal status to boys and men and can fulfil their potential in every aspect of their lives.

The Senior Advocacy and Campaigns Officer at Girls Not Brides delivers compelling global advocacy and campaign agenda for Girls Not Brides, to help realise our vision of a world free of child marriage, where girls can fulfil their potential in every aspect of their lives. Uses strong advocacy and campaigns skills coupled with wide experience of global to support our organisation’s strategic objectives – movement building, influencing, and learning – to empower others, opening spaces for voices to be raised, and drive transformational change. Working as part of a globally dispersed and diverse team, and closely with members, National Partnerships and coalitions, leads delivery of our global advocacy and campaigns under the leadership of the Director Communications, Advocacy and Campaigns. This role will include travel to represent and participate with members of Girls Not Brides at key meetings for advocacy and influencing.

Salary range       

£38,250 rising on an annual incremental basis. Girls Not Brides also offers a generous 10% pension.

Contract

This is an initial two-year full-time role. The successful candidate must have the right to work in the United Kingdom.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Effective Global Advocacy

  • Lead delivery of Girls Not Brides advocacy strategy including key sector integration agenda, and manage maintain strong existing partnerships, and identify new allies to enhance broader sector integration of ending child marriage.
  • Lead the coordination of the Girls Not Brides global advocacy group and other working groups, developing the agenda, convening calls, developing joint positions and ensuring coordinated advocacy.
  • Lead coordination of other global advocacy working groups, including with donor governments, UN Agencies, Girls Not Brides members and other external stakeholders.
  • Analyse, develop and implement strategic outreach and engagement plan approach for development sectors through sectoral partnerships and initiatives.
  • Liaise with regional advocacy and campaign leads in supporting National Partnerships and members to develop and use advocacy skills, and monitor, analyse, influence and respond to relevant legislative and policy opportunities at the global, regional and national level.
  • Liaise with regional advocacy and campaign leads to inform Girls Not Brides members and partners of developments and opportunities for influence and support them in undertaking coordinated advocacy around global and national moments.
  • Support the Director in Formulating policy positions and key messages and develop and deliver strategic advocacy plans, both for secretariat and with members.
  • Develop and disseminate policy and advocacy content including fact sheets, policy briefs, updates, and position statements.
  • Brief the CEO and senior staff on bilateral meetings, speaking events and other outreach.
  • Write policy analyses, op eds and blogs, briefs, letters, advocacy alerts, submissions and briefing papers to support advocacy objectives.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of national advocacy strategies.
  • Identify opportunities for external advocacy engagement and design and project manage the implementation of advocacy strategies.
  • Coordinate trainings and development programmes for the secretariat and global partnership, including webinars and learning series.
  • Manage internal project budgets and external restricted budgets including donor reporting and financial.
  • Manage key relationships with external stakeholders.
  • Support and collaborate with the Development & Outreach Team for international advocacy grant proposals, projects and specific activities.
  • Support and collaborate with the Partnership and Learning Team with coordinating regular key messages to be communicated externally by raising the international advocacy to end child marriage activities.

Transformational campaigns 

  • Deliver Girls Not Brides annual campaigns and monitor progress against agreed milestones and targets.
  • Devise plans for international days and other big moments and develop key messages to galvanise the global movement.
  • Manage Campaign grants with members in close collaboration with Regional advocacy and campaign leads.
  • Liaise with the Communications team to devise and amplify members messages to enhance our campaign and advocacy goals.
  • Develop a member campaign working group to support development of annual campaigns.

  • Uphold the core values of Girls Not Brides in all areas of work and interactions with colleagues, members, partners, and other stakeholders.
  • Line manage the advocacy and campaigns associate and relevant consultants as necessary, delegating responsibilities and tasks as appropriate.
  • Comply with Girls Not Brides policies and processes, with note for safeguarding, diversity and inclusion, the code of conduct and data protection.
  • Ensure that internal databases and monitoring information are kept fully up-to-date.
  • Commit to ongoing personal development and learning.
  • Fulfil any other reasonable requests for the advancement of Girls Not Brides. 

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential experience 

  • Significant professional experience in a comparable role at in the not-for-profit sector, international/intergovernmental organisation or social enterprise.
  • Degree-level qualification in a relevant area such as public policy, development studies, international relations, communications, human rights or gender issues or proven experience in a related field plus extensive relevant professional training.
  • Proven experience in Advocacy and campaigning and ability to work with coalitions and the ability to inform international policy discussions with the realities of grass-roots work.

Essential skills and knowledge

  • Strong understanding of advocacy and campaigning in changing social norms.
  • Demonstrated ability and understanding of how to deliver effective advocacy and campaign strategies.
  • Excellent organisational skills.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills, including the ability to work with a diverse range of actors at different levels and from different cultural contexts.
  • Confident networker and influencer with the ability to represent Girls Not Brides at high-level events.

  • Proactive and able to confidently take initiative and make appropriate decisions.
  • Willingness to work flexibly and regularly travel internationally, as necessary.

Desirable 

  • Knowledge of French and/or Spanish is highly desirable.
  • Direct experience of advocating or campaigning on child marriage or closely related issues.
