Statement on Racial Equity and Intersectionality

At IWPR, we believe social and economic mobility in the United States is determined and influenced by race, ethnicity, class, gender identity, sexual orientation, and other markers of difference. In working to achieve economic equity and to better understand the experiences of all women in the workforce and in society, we use both racial equity and intersectional frameworks in our research and analysis to help generate strategies and solutions that are grounded in the economic realities of women and families.

 

We also prioritize building an inclusive and welcoming work environment that values the diverse perspectives and experiences of staff in its research and efforts to improve gender and racial equity.

 

POSITION OVERVIEW

Reporting to the Vice President of Research, the Senior Research Economist conducts original research and analysis on issues related to workforce development and the future of work; employment and earnings; income security and equitable workplace policies; economic mobility and advancement for women and younger workers in the labor market; and child care and the care economy.  They are responsible for leading research projects in these core areas, sharing findings at events and conferences, fundraising and managing philanthropic partnerships, and building networks and organizational partnerships in the field. They will also lead the data analytics team at IWPR, work across teams to provide support with data analysis, and develop a strategy for the collection, management, and storage of data at IWPR.

 

The ideal candidate is a forward-thinking, experienced and collaborative leader. They have excellent writing and editing skills and experience with translating high-level research for broad audiences through op-eds, reports, or other similar mediums. They have experience using racial equity and intersectional frameworks and analysis in research study designs, written reports and briefs. They are comfortable working in a high-impact, fast-paced environment.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Research and Data Analysis

Perform advanced, complex quantitative data analysis of large datasets and trends, utilizing network science and/or other statistical methods, including creating data visuals and developing, modeling, programming, and fielding online surveys;
Conduct policy-focused economic analysis, including on issues related to poverty and income inequality, paid sick leave, the wage gap and pay equity, women’s and family economic security, quality jobs, and/or educational equity and access;
Collect, clean, and analyze quantitative data for projects, including managing data, writing computer programs for data processing and analysis, and producing literature reviews;
Provide organization-wide support on research design and data sources available for studying dimensions and trends of employment & earnings for individuals, families, employers, or geographic units;
Apply racial equity and intersectional frameworks and analysis in research study designs, written reports, and briefs;
Design research to meet high standards of methodological rigor;
Write high-quality working papers, reports and presentations; and
Report research findings, including producing tables, graphics, and maps for reports, as well as writing up findings for briefs and reports and presenting at meetings and conferences.
Strategy, Vision, and Leadership

Work across issue areas and teams to identify and assess emerging research  and data gaps in the field and potential innovations and opportunities for IWPR;
Lead and supervise the data analytics team;
In collaboration with program area researchers, design and implement a data warehousing strategy for data from the federal statistical system that is used repeatedly throughout the year, such as the Current Population Survey Annual Social and Economic supplement, American Community Survey, National Health Interview Survey; and
Represent IWPR at meetings, coalitions, and events.
Program Design and Management

Exhibit strong program and project management skills, and ability to manage multiple deadlines and competing demands;
Identify external consultants as needed to provide support on projects that require specific technical expertise outside that are not available among IWPR staff;
Track project budgets and timelines to ensure that work is completed on time and within resource parameters;
Work with VP of Research to fundraise and manage donor relationships, including writing grant proposals and reports;
Work with communications staff to initiate policy campaigns and dissemination efforts on key issues and priorities;
Advise on emerging research gaps in the field and potential innovations and opportunities for IWPR; and
Consult with program area researchers on methodological questions arising from data analysis needs and assist with designing new studies and considering data availability and analysis plans for quantitative studies including identifying data sources, confirming study design feasibility, and contributing to proposal development.
Supervisory Responsibility

Supervise the work of junior research staff and external consultants providing support on technical quantitative studies.
Education and Experience

PhD in Economics and at least 10 years of experience in economic research and policy field or Masters in Economics with at least 15 years of experience in the economic research and policy field.

This position is based in Washington, DC, and is full-time, exempt. The salary for the position of Senior Research Economist is $115,000-$130,000/year and will be commensurate with experience.
