Job Classification: Lateral Patrol Deputy Sheriff

The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office is recruiting for the position of Lateral Patrol Deputy to fill current vacancies.  To be considered for this process, applicants must:

*Certified Oregon applicants or Out of State Certified applicants that possess a 4-year degree do not need to complete the Frontline test.

The components to expect during our selection process:

  • Successful completion of the National Testing Network Frontline test.
  • Application pre-screening review and selection by Deschutes County.
  • Criminal Background Check.

  • Statement of Personal History Background Investigation.
  • Successful completion of Fitness Evaluation (administered by Deschutes County).
  • Sheriff/Captain Interview.
  • Conditional Job Offer.
  • Medical Evaluation / Psychological Evaluation.
  • Formal Job Offer.
  • Monthly Salary Information (based on 182.53/mo.):  $6,277.22 to $8,408.24 / Month (7 total pay steps)

Applicants with up to 60 months of certified experience will begin at $6,588.58 per month (Step 2), and applicants with 61 months of experience or more will begin at $6,917.56 per month (Step 3). Starting wages are based on a 173.33-hour work month.  Hours will increase to 182.53 monthly after the initial orientation and training period. At the top step, with possession of a DPSST Advanced certification and wellness pay, a Patrol Deputy Sheriff can expect to earn over $115,000.00 per year.

For those currently possessing DPSST Certification in this classification, certificate pay begins upon hire date:

·        6% – Intermediate

·        11% – Advanced

·        Out of State Certified applicants will receive certification pay as soon as certification is granted by the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST).

Additional compensation upon hire date:

·        3% Wellness pay.

·        50 hours Compensatory Bank.

Additional compensation when eligible:

·        Bilingual Incentive Pay

Department Overview: The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office employs over 300 members and over 300+ Volunteers.  Through working together, we support the values and mission of the Sheriff’s Office: “Proudly Serving our Community by Delivering Superior Public Safety and Service.” DCSO has three divisions: Patrol, Corrections, and Investigations.  Specialized units include Canine, Sheriff’s Office SWAT, Community Action Target Team (CATT), School Resource Deputy (SRD), Street Crimes, Central Oregon Drug Enforcement (CODE), Search and Rescue/Special Services (marine, snowmobile, and ATV patrol) and Training.

Job Requirements

Age: 21

US Citizen: Yes. Per Oregon law, an applicant must be able to obtain US Citizenship within 18 months of employment. To meet this requirement as a condition of hire, an applicant must demonstrate that he/she can obtain citizenship within the required timeframe.

High School Grad/GED: Must be a high school graduate or possess a General Education Development (GED) high school equivalency certificate.

Valid OREGON State Driver’s License: Ability to obtain a valid Oregon State driver’s license. Must also possess a current driver’s license in the applicant’s state and an acceptable driving history.

Ability to Read/Speak English: Yes. Deschutes County also offers bilingual incentive pay.

Vision: DPSST requirement of at least 20/30 corrected vision when tested using both eyes together. Must also be able to distinguish color vision as determined by DPSST (OAR -0070).

College: Two years of college-level coursework at an accredited institution of higher learning in a related field is preferred.

Academy Certification: Be certified or be able to obtain certification by the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training – DPSST Minimum Standards of Employment as a Law Enforcement Officer as noted by DPSST; www.oregon.gov/DPSST (OAR).

Hiring Process: Candidates must pass all written, physical, oral, background, medical, and psychological examinations.

Specific Disqualifiers/Behaviors: Felony, Criminal Activity Disqualifiers:
Any felony conviction.

Driving Disqualifiers:
Repeated offenses, which indicate disrespect for the law. DUII arrest within the past ten years.

Drug Use Disqualifiers:
Illegal manufacture, transport, or sale of a controlled substance. Repetitive, recent, or continual drug use.

Employment Disqualifiers:
Discharge from employment or disciplinary issues related to poor performance, negative co-worker interaction, attendance, policy violations, or inability to adjust to corrective discipline.

Additional Disqualifiers:

·     Negative outcome of Military separation review.

·     Decertification as a police officer in any state.

·     Any crime of violence, including domestic violence.

·     Respondent named in a Restraining Order.

·     Dishonesty

·     Conviction of theft.

·     Failure to follow directions.

Additional Requirements: Deputy Sheriffs must reside in Deschutes County or have a minimum response time of 60 minutes to the main Sheriff’s Office in Bend.
