TechGirls connects and supports the next generation of women leaders in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics by providing them access and opportunities to advance their skills and pursue their dreams.  It is an initiative of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and is administered by Legacy International.

  • Since 2012, TechGirls has trained and mentored 343 teenage girls (ages 15-17) from Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Palestinian Territories, Tunisia, and Yemen.
  • In 2019, the program expanded to include young women from Central Asia (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan).
  • In 2022, the program expands to support approximately 111 young women from 35 countries/territories and 25 U.S. peers in a dynamic four week U.S.-based experience with an 8-month mentoring program. (This includes pre- and post-exchange activities and mentoring.)

This summer, we will hire 13-15 women who are energetic, passionate and organized, with the ability to build community and to facilitate a fast paced exchange program.  TechGirls’ Youth Resident Assistant/Group Leaders should also be resilient and calm under pressure, highly collaborative, able to develop good working relationships with people, generous, and supportive.  You will gain valuable skills in international exchange program management and practice international relations and development in a real-world setting.

Primary responsibilities:  Serve as one of 13 Youth Resident Assistants as part of the 21-member team for 111 international teens and 25 U.S. teens.  Staff create a safe, secure, and rich learning environment (in-person; possible virtual-hybrid.) Each Youth Resident Assistants mentors one small group of approximately 10-12 girls learning together throughout the 3-week intensive program, assisting individual girls to meet the demands of the program.

  • Guide students through an arc of leadership development as they integrate the lessons from a variety of guest speakers, technical instruction and, most importantly, the lessons they learn from one another.
  • Assist in facilitating 4-5 leadership clinics, group-building and orientation activities, cultural sharing sessions, activity and reflections circles, and university/career readiness workshops.
  • Guide students through community-based project planning sessions and capstone program preparation.
  • Monitor youth participation providing an encouraging and supportive environment.
  • Assist with general program support including: event/meeting set-up, communications with program providers, assisting with logistics (procuring supplies, getting food, getting laundry done, errands).
  • Daily health monitoring. Collaborate with a health specialist to model, uphold, and monitor health protocols and guidelines; and
  • Escorting and monitoring group on outings.

Key Dates & Workflow:  temporary, full time, Jun 20-Aug 1, 2022.  (Subject to adjustments.)

  • June 20-24: Virtual Staff Training
  • July 3-7: In-person staff training and program set-up at Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA
  • July 8-10: Assist with arrivals in Washington, DC or set-up at Virginia Tech
  • July 10-26: Virginia Tech Program, Blacksburg, VA
  • July 26-30: Program wrap-up in Washington DC
  • August 1:  Staff departures (Select staff have option to serve as flight escorts.  See below.)


  • Previous resident advisors or have group leading experience with teens;
  • Ages 20 and older;
  • U.S Citizens or Permanent Residents;
  • Professional, flexible, resilient, resourceful, and proactive;
  • Good decision makers, able to establish and change priorities according to needs of participants/program;
  • Possess prior peer leadership experience and enjoy spending time with high school students;
  • Strong curriculum development, facilitation and group building skills;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and a high level of social and emotional intelligence;
  • Have a passion for tech and gender empowerment and come from a wide variety of backgrounds;
  • Willing to put their students’ learning and development ahead of their own experience;
  • Willing to work in an intensive, cross-cultural environment with limited personal time;
  • Prior international travel is a plus but not required; and
  • Ready for an intense, challenging, and rewarding summer!

Additional Qualifications Points:

  • First Aid and CPR certification is a plus, but not required.
  • Virtual programming/facilitation experience preferred but not required.
  • Are able to promote a safe environment of academic development and social awareness.

Compensation: $2000 (pre-tax/gross).  PLUS:

  • Housing & meals throughout staff training and program delivery, while on duty with the program, are covered.  At Virginia Tech staff are  in single occupancy dorm rooms. While in Washington DC hotels, staff  share a room with one other staff member.
  • Opportunity for international travel as a flight escort to one of the 35 countries at end of program. Round trip air ticket and 2 days per diem.
  • Transportation, admission fees and other associate program costs while traveling with the group staff and participants are also covered.
  • Transportation to job location – this will be negotiated at time of offer.
