Musawah ( is a global movement for equality and justice in the Muslim family that advances human rights for women living in Muslim contexts, in both their public and private lives.

We act to grow the movement, build knowledge and advocate for change in discriminatory laws and practices. Musawah was launched in February 2009 at a Global Meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, that was attended by over 250 women and men from some 50 countries of Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, North America and the Pacific.

Musawah is currently seeking a Digital Engagement Officer (DEO) – Arabic to invigorate,  and mobilise our advocates and supporters from the MENA region and Arabic speakers globally,  to change the public discourse that discriminates against Muslim women in and outside the family. We want to pursue reforms using digital tools and online communities. In this position, you will create digital content and implement effective digital strategies to amplify our voice and accelerate our impact on the ground especially in the MENA region. The DEO-Arabic is part of the vibrant Musawah Communications team is expected to manage Musawah’s website (, and assist in online publishing, digital engagement, online advocacy, email marketing and social media efforts in the Arabic language tailored towards the needs and demands of the MENA region and Arabic speakers worldwide.

The DEO-Arabic will work closely with the Musawah Programmes team in the areas of Knowledge Building, Capacity Building and Outreach, International Advocacy, the MENA Regional Programme officer and other members of the Secretariat to support in the dissemination and sharing of cutting edge content. The post holder is required to suggest and support methods  that enable direct communication with activists, grassroots movements and individuals in the Arabic speaking world . S/he will report directly to the Co-Director- Exterior.

General Communications

a)    Collaborate with the Secretariat team to create an annual communications (including digital media) plan and budget.

b)    Identify significant media and national-level public policy issues that can be leveraged to support and promote Musawah’s work, and to create and implement media strategies to capitalise on them.

c)    Develop digital strategies for all of Musawah’s programmatic areas to broaden reach, raise public awareness, enable dialogue and mobilise activism.

d)    Develop and test tailored communication materials that reach a variety of audiences.

e)    Coordinate with Musawah advocates to build and amplify strategic digital moments through our networks and the wider women’s rights movement.

f)     Develop quarterly impact reports to support Musawah’s reporting and engagement needs.

g)    Monitor and provide the latest updates regarding Muslim family laws in the MENA region.

Social media

a)    Work closely with members of the Communications team to develop Musawah’s social media strategy, messaging, and campaigns to grow its online presence, with a focus on the MENA region and Arabic speakers globally .

b)    Work with the Programmes team to create and deploy social media content that amplifies Musawah knowledge and language, advances our general advocacy and Campaign for Justice in the MENA region.

c)    Generate a variety of high quality and highly engaging online content by selecting the key messages that will resonate with MENA  audiences in the Arabic language. This includes managing freelance content creators (Arabic), ensuring content is of high quality, innovative and produced in a timely manner.

d)    Create impactful communications materials (including graphics, gifs, and short videos) in the Arabic language for Musawah’s social media platforms, and ensure effective dissemination to reach target audiences.

e)    Translate, proofread and copy edit communications collaterals, including visuals and videos, in Arabic and ensure that they are in line with Musawah’s messaging.

f)     Monitor social media inboxes to engage with audiences online and route inquiries to appropriate team members.

g)    Track and analyze digital metrics to measure success and identify key lessons learned, and share those learnings and recommendations to help strengthen future work, with a focus on the MENA region.

Website, newsletter and email campaigns

a)    Work closely with the Communications team to strategise website (and microsite) development.

b)    Co-manage content of Musawah’s website ( and promote key pieces of content in Arabic.

c)    Optimise the use of Arabic language on Musawah’s website and ensure that it is reader-friendly.

d)    Coordinate the mirroring of the Musawah website into Arabic, which may involve exploring website translation tools.

e)    Manage the website back-end and monitor website traffic and Search Engine Optimization (SEO).

f)     Work with the Communications team in producing  Musawah’s constituent engagement content (e.g. Mailchimp announcements and Musawah’s quarterly newsletter Vision).

Being part of the Musawah global team

a)    Participate in Secretariat and other meetings (virtual and in-person) as part of institution building and governance strengthening.

b)    Represent Musawah at various national, regional and international meetings.

c)    Contribute to the needs of the Secretariat and assist other Secretariat members in strategising, testing and finessing methods and tools to realise Musawah’s theory of change and any relevant work.


Knowledge, Skills and Experience

You are a creative and courageous individual who is passionate about realising equality and justice for all with an intersectional approach to anti-oppression.You are able to tell simple, powerful stories that synthesize complex issues and inspire people to take action online and want to make real change in their communities. You will be a thought leader, and suggest innovative online ideas to engage people and shift narratives. While you have a keen interest in developing big-picture strategy, you also enjoy the nitty-gritty of implementation, using various digital tools to be able to communicate how and where people can effect change.

The Digital Engagement Officer should be able to meet most of the following:

a)    Passionate belief in the vision, mission and objectives of Musawah, and knowledge of issues related to women, gender and Islam;

b)    Fluency in Arabic and English is required with strong writing skills;

c)    3-5 years in digital campaigning or organising;

d)    Degree in Media, Communications, or Journalism preferred;

e)    Proven ability to create, prepare and execute creative and effective digital communication content and strategies;

f)     Experience administering social media and website management systems with ability to improve user experience and page conversion;

g)    Experience in basic graphic design;

h)    Experience with and/or willingness to learn Google Suite, social media platforms and online advocacy tools (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Youtube, Linkedin, Iconosquare, Canva, , etc.); website management systems (WordPress); customer relationship management and email marketing (Airtable and Mailchimp a plus); Zoom video conferencing; and other digital tools as needed;

i)      Keen interest in following digital & social media trends (both non- and advocacy-related) and news, especially in the MENA region;

j)      A team player with strong ability to work collaboratively, and in global teams;


Location, Salary and Benefits

Musawah offers a competitive salary and benefits that are appropriate for such a position in the non-profit sector, dependent upon experience and qualifications.

The Musawah Secretariat currently operates in a hybrid model, with a small core team located in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and other team members working remotely across multiple regions and time zones.

The successful candidate shall be based in the country s/he is located. You must have full working rights in the country you will be based in.

Salary range: USD 1,550 – USD 2,000/month
