About the Opportunity

The Gender Equity and Governance Program seeks a Program Officer (PO) to lead the U.S. Reproductive Equity strategy (USRE). As a member of the Gender Equity and Governance team, the PO manages The Hewlett Foundation’s work to support family planning services and advocacy to protect reproductive rights. With the support of a Grants Officer, the PO will manage a grant portfolio that includes $12M-$15M in grant funds, as well as resources for grantees that extend “beyond the grant dollars,” including access to donor collaboratives, grantee connections with other funders, and other forms of knowledge-sharing and influencing.

The PO will also work with colleagues to identify opportunities for cross-strategy and cross-sector collaboration and learning. In addition, the PO will contribute to the overall culture of the organization and promote and put into practice the foundation’s values and practices of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

 

Candidate Profile

Reproductive health, rights, and justice in the United States is at a crossroads. Currently, much of the foundation’s grantmaking in this area involves building strong institutions, strengthening the field, policy and advocacy, and grassroots community mobilization, with a smaller set of grants focused on service delivery. Looking forward, The Hewlett Foundation will seek to build on the learnings of this work to support policy change, reproductive health and rights service delivery, and movement and field-building.

Recognizing the content expertise that comes from practitioners, The Hewlett Foundation seeks candidates who have direct experience in on-the-ground movement and/or field-building, program leadership, or service delivery. Knowledge of and experience developing and moving strategies that contribute to policy change in reproductive equity or other aligned areas will be valuable skill sets to manage this portfolio. Aligned areas could include any issue space that relates to identity-based movement work, such as marijuana legalization, LGBTQ+ rights, racial justice, women’s economic empowerment, and/or gun control. Experience with state-based work is an asset, but not a requirement.

Prior experience in philanthropy is not a prerequisite.

The foundation seeks a strategic thinker and resourceful self-starter who is passionate about promoting and improving reproductive health, rights, and justice in the U.S. They will be comfortable operating with broad strategic parameters and exploring opportunities that can lead to bold and unconventional approaches.

 

Areas of Responsibility and Core Competencies

Development and Execution of Reproductive Equity Strategy: Administer and support a large portfolio of existing grants. Shape and implement an evolved USRE strategy in the first two years of the role that leverages outcome-focused philanthropy and that is responsive to the most significant needs in the issue space. Apply a combination of sound judgment, creativity, and basic qualitative and quantitative analysis skills.

Required Core Competencies: Extensive knowledge of political and cultural crosscurrents in the reproductive equity (or aligned) field and a demonstrated ability to navigate them diplomatically and skillfully. Experience with movement-building, field-building, and coalition-building to galvanize disparate groups around a key issue for change. Ability to gather and synthesize information from a variety of sources, identify what is most important to consider and prioritize, and use it to make timely and confident decisions. Ability to see the “big picture” and translate ideas into practical actions.

External Relationship-building and Leadership: Develop and maintain strong and trusted relationships with grantees, funders, and other actors in their fields of work, often fostering collaboration and collective action among them. Identify and support creative solutions to ensure the success of individual grantees, in line with the foundation’s guiding principles of working with grantees in collaborative, mutually respectful ways. Represent the foundation in key settings and outlets as the foundation’s leading voice on U.S. reproductive equity work.

Required Core Competencies: Ability to work with and foster collaboration across diverse stakeholders through bridging and building relationships and inspiring collaboration across sectors and ability to listen attentively and synthesize ideas from a variety of disciplines. Strong communications and representational skills, including capacity to communicate clearly with diverse audiences and demonstrated experience in facilitation.

Mission Commitment and Collaboration: Contribute to an environment that centers learning and listening with active engagement. Provide thought partnership to colleagues on the Gender Equity and Governance team, as well as with colleagues across the foundation, sharing ideas and strategies to strengthen impact of work. Apply the values and practice of diversity, equity, and inclusion in grantmaking and interactions with internal and external colleagues.

Required Core Competencies: Commitment to the foundation’s guiding principles and to the vision and goals of its Gender Equity and Governance Program. Curiosity and interest in collaborating with people with different perspectives and styles, as well as proven dedication to social justice and addressing systemic racism in day-to-day work, including grantmaking. Excellent organizational skills, with a demonstrated track record of consistently meeting deadlines.

 

Salary, Location, and Benefits

The Hewlett Foundation is committed to providing compensation that is competitive within the philanthropic sector. We offer a generous total compensation package that emphasizes both base salary and comprehensive benefits, including relocation expenses, professional development, and retirement savings plan. The salary range for this role starts at $160,000, with final salary based on the candidate’s years of experience and our practice of maintaining salary equity within the foundation.

The position is based in Menlo Park, California. Staff are currently expected to work from The Hewlett Foundation offices at least 2-3 days per week, when they are not traveling for work purposes. This role will require 15%-35% of time spent traveling, primarily throughout the U.S., with scheduling at the discretion of the PO.
