Join the EMA Fund’s Board of Directors

The Eastern Massachusetts Abortion (EMA) Fund works to uplift every person’s right to bodily self-determination by providing funding and logistical support to people who live in or are having abortions in Eastern Massachusetts through movement building, advocacy, education, and direct aid.

What does it look like to join our Board?
The Board of Directors supports the work of the EMA Fund to advance abortion access and reproductive justice broadly, including the work of providing access to abortion care, after care support, and other mission-aligned programs and services. The board provides strategic governance, visioning, and organizational and financial support to our staff.

In 2022, the EMA Fund’s board transitioned from a working board to a governance board, and most recently, we have completed a board development process in 2025 that has led to our current structure, rooted in values of clarity, non-hierarchy, and accountability. Our board structure draws upon the framework of sociocracy, with our board made up of different circles, some of which are topical based on staff support needs and one of which is dedicated to coordination and governance. This structure creates a balance between sharing power and robust structures for accountability, while allowing for clarity, coordination, and information-sharing across the board.

Currently, we are seeking potential board members who are committed to the EMA Fund’s mission and who align with our board’s commitment to accounting for and disrupting the power dynamics inherent in many traditional board models. We are committed to uplifting staff autonomy and expertise in the experience of our callers, through relationships that are non-punitive and non-hierarchical. Our role as the board is to offer additional capacity and expertise to fill gaps in staff responsibilities and to strengthen the EMA Fund’s work and mission. We hope to find members who are excited by these values and are open to implementing and fully realizing our new board structure.

All board members are eligible for an annual stipend of $3,000/year. The EMA Fund strongly believes that paying for people’s time and strategic thinking creates a more equitable and just governing board.

Commitments of the Board include:

Serve a two-year Board Term (July 2026 – June 2028);
Attend monthly 90-minute board Zoom calls;
Serve on 1-2 board committees focused on areas such as fundraising and communications, staff development, legal and financial matters, and organizational strategy;
Remain in regular communication through email and Signal;
Commit approximately 10 hours a month to virtual and asynchronous work related to EMA; and
Reside in Massachusetts for the duration of their board term.

Our aim is to build a diversely experienced board that is able to holistically support the EMA Fund’s work. At this moment, we are especially prioritizing recruiting board members with skills including, but not limited to the below:

Communications, Social Media, Marketing
Fundraising
Press Relations
Philanthropy
Legal / Nonprofit Law
Budgeting and Financial Management
Human Resources and Personnel
Experience with Non-Hierarchy and Staff Self-Governance
Connections to Local Groups and Movements
Conflict Mediation

Who are you?
EMA is committed to representation and equity within our Fund. Folks who have had abortions, are queer, trans, non-binary, Black, Indigenous, people of color, disabled, parents, and anyone who has experienced systemic oppression and/or gender-based violence are strongly encouraged to apply. We strive towards being governed by a Board that reflects the communities we serve.

While we are looking for new board members with all types of experience, we are especially excited to see applications from individuals who have experience in human relations, legal and nonprofit law, financial management, fundraising, and experience with non-hierarchical organizational structures and staff self-governance.

If you have social justice experience outside of the reproductive justice space or outside of formal work experience, but are drawn to this work – we welcome your application. We also hope this is an opportunity to learn and grow in the areas you’re interested in, in addition to leading in areas where you are already experienced.
