ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

Internews is seeking a Gender and Marginalized Groups (GMG) Advisor for a forthcoming USAID-funded Leader with Associates (LWA) global Internet freedom award that will support local civil society, independent media, and human rights defenders to better prevent and respond to digital repression in their own contexts, particularly in repressive contexts. The activity will focus on building long-term, local resilience among civil society through a networked approach involving global, regional, and local actors. The activity will provide technical assistance on digital security, digital governance advocacy and engagement, censorship circumvention, and holistic legal, psychosocial, and physical security support. The GMG Advisor will report to the Chief of Party (COP).

The GMG Advisor is responsible for ensuring the project and all of its open activities meaningfully and holistically integrate considerations particular to women, LGBTQI+ persons, gender nonconforming individuals, and other marginalized groups, in accordance with the Gender and Marginalized Groups cross-cutting priority.

LOGISTICS

Internews has headquarters offices in Arcata, CA; Washington, DC; and London, UK. This is a fully remote position, and candidates based anywhere in the world are welcome to apply. Individuals must have work authorization in their current location that does not require sponsorship from Internews. Additionally, there are locations in which Internews is not able to support fully remote work.

DAY-TO-DAY TASKS will include: 

  • Develop a Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) plan for the project and related activities.
  • Act as the main point of contact and oversight for the implementation of psychosocial support activities within the activity.
  • Identity activities through which GESI Plan can be implemented and collaborate with the technical team on integrating GESI activities in technical assistance, research, grants, capacity-building efforts, etc.
  • Build capacity of staff, partner organizations and project participants to use a GESI approach and provide training, tools, and support to mainstream GESI methodologies in their work.
  • Provide guidance on engaging different vulnerable and/or marginalized groups in the design, implementation, and evaluation of activities, and ensure that vulnerable groups benefit equally from program activities.
  • Evaluate GESI challenges within the context of the project and draft specific and context-driven sub-plans to address GESI concerns per activity in coordination with Project leads.
  • Cooperate with the Communications Specialist to prepare communications materials that highlight the Project’s GESI approach (success stories, lessons learned, etc.) and support the development of GESI-sensitive behavior change communication and messages. As needed, serve as a representative of the project’s GESI approach throughout the organization.
  • Review program documentation for gender sensitivity and inclusivity (including research design, M&E tools, assessments, annual work plans, programmatic reports, etc.) and maintain awareness of larger trends and patterns in GESI approaches within the sector.
    Lead research into the impact of Internet freedom issues (i.e., AI, TFGBV, etc.) on women and marginalized groups.
  • Work with M&E Lead to identify appropriate GESI indicators and measurement methods to monitor and evaluate project outcomes related to gender equality and inclusion of underserved groups.
  • Guide analysis of the project data from a gender and inclusion perspective and devise strategies to address issues emerging from the analysis.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with GESI stakeholders, especially within the Internet freedom and civil society sectors.
  • Become familiar with Internews’ GESI Strategy and participate in any related working groups or training to contribute to and learn from the organization’s GESI culture.
  • As relevant, liaise with USAID GESI Advisors and Specialists.
  • Any other related duties assigned by the supervisor to ensure program success.

QUALIFICATIONS WE’RE LOOKING FOR

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher, preferably in human rights, gender studies, development or a relevant social science field. Advanced degree and/or continuing education in these fields are strongly preferred.
  • At least 10 years of related work experience advising donor-supported programming on integrating considerations related to gender and marginalized groups.
  • Robust expertise on issues related to gender and marginalized groups, with a demonstrated track record of serving as a resource to peers in the sector broadly.
  • Previous experience advising on issues related to gender and marginalized groups must include programming related to internet freedom, digital security, civil society, policy advocacy, independent media, and/or human rights.
  • Experience in developing and delivering GESI-themed content in training materials as well as GESI-focused assessments, training, and organizational capacity building.
  • Experience working on GESI with USAID-funded projects.
  • Experience leading GESI analyses and strategy development for organizations and/or projects.
  • Experience in research and data collection and analysis.
    Ability to build and maintain productive working relationships with experts in the field; network of peers a significant asset.
  • Experience using project management tools such as Airtable.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize multiple ongoing assignments.
  • Ability and willingness to travel internationally, up to 15% of the time.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strategic thinking and ability to facilitate same among project stakeholders and beneficiaries.
  • Excellent verbal and written skills in English; preference for a second language.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to navigate politically sensitive subjects and maintain constructive relationships with a diverse group of stakeholders.
