Pursuing Justice for Women and Girls

The California Women’s Law Center is seeking applicants for the position of Staff Attorney.

Background
The mission of the California Women’s Law Center is a nonprofit legal services support center whose mission is to create a more just and equitable society by breaking down barriers and advancing the potential of women and girls through transformative litigation, policy advocacy, and education.

CWLC prioritizes four main areas of advocacy: gender discrimination (with a focus on Title IX enforcement), violence against women, pay equity and economic security, and women’s health and reproductive rights. Our work is predominantly focused on assisting low-income women and girls and communities of color.

Responsibilities
CWLC seeks a motivated self-starter who will help formulate and implement CWLC’s strategies to secure justice for women and girls. The Staff Attorney is an exempt, full-time position that reports directly to the Senior Staff Attorney, with input from the Executive Director. The Staff Attorney will:

  • Assist in establishing the priorities and goals for CWLC and in implementing those priorities, including assisting in the development of legal strategies
  • Work with and support the Executive Director, Senior Staff Attorney, and other legal staff on all aspects of CWLC’s legal work
  • Litigate at the trial and appellate levels, draft amicus briefs, and work with outside legal counsel
  • Serve as an expert resource by creating and leading legal trainings and providing technical assistance to direct legal services providers, attorneys, and community organizations
  • Engage in policy advocacy, collaborate on policy initiatives with partner organizations, and assist with advocacy at the local, state, and federal level as needed
  • Collaborate with local, state, and national coalitions and partnerships that support goals and initiatives consistent with the mission of CWLC
  • Assist in the development and outreach of CWLC by assisting in grant writing efforts, events, and special projects or programs
  • Work with an intersectional lens on inclusion and diversity
  • Perform other duties as required to meet the standards and further the mission of the organization

Education
J.D., L.L.B, or the equivalent. Admitted to the California Bar and in good standing.

Qualifications

  • Practiced law for at least two years; experience in civil litigation or family law a plus
  • Excellent writing, research, and speaking skills
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to think creatively and be resourceful
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with colleagues, clients, and partner organizations and outside counsel
  • Administrative skills
  • Fluency in another language a plus

Salary and benefits:

  • $74,000-$92,000, commensurate with experience
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance (paid by employer), plus retirement benefits
  • California State Bar dues and professional liability insurance covered
