Job Summary
This position is responsible for enforcing federal, state, and local laws, as well as protecting life and property.
Essential Functions
Conducts investigations into criminal activities, interviews witnesses and suspects, and collects evidence.
Responds to emergency calls, including medical emergencies and civil disputes.
Patrols assigned areas and performs proactive law enforcement.
Conducts traffic stops, issues citations, and investigates traffic accidents.
Prepares reports and assists with court document preparation.
Serves arrest warrants and subpoenas and enforces court orders.
Performs duties of a Field Training Officer or serves on special teams as assigned.
Maintains equipment and vehicles.
Completes required training.
Performs other duties as needed.
Knowledge Required
Understanding of federal/state laws, criminal codes, and department policies.
Proficiency in traffic accident investigation and knowledge of the city’s geography.
Familiarity with judicial procedures and the court system.
Skills in using computers, police vehicles, firearms, and emergency equipment.
Competency in communication, both oral and written.
Supervisory Controls
The Sergeant or Corporal provides general instructions. Work is reviewed for accuracy and adherence to established procedures.
Guidelines
Guidelines include laws, court rulings, departmental policies, and training manuals, requiring judgment in application.
Complexity/Scope of Work
The position involves varied law enforcement duties, with emergencies contributing to the complexity. The role’s purpose is to protect life and property while enforcing laws, directly impacting crime prevention and safety.
Contacts
Interactions include co-workers, emergency service providers, court personnel, attorneys, medical staff, law enforcement officers, school officials, and the public. These contacts involve exchanging information, providing services, and resolving issues.
Physical Demands/Work Environment
Work is performed indoors and outdoors, with intermittent sitting, standing, bending, and walking. Occasionally, light and heavy objects are lifted. Specialized law enforcement equipment is used, and work can occur in adverse weather conditions.
Supervisory and Management Responsibility
None.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED with specialized training in law enforcement.
One to two years of relevant experience, such as an internship or similar role.
Possession of a valid driver’s license and the ability to obtain Peace Officer Certification from the Wyoming Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission.
