Please note:

Completing this exam is only one of the requirements for being placed on a certified hiring list for the Fire Fighter/EMT position with the City of Wilkes-Barre Bureau of Fire.

You must also:

1)      Obtain, complete, and return a Fire Civil Service Application in person at the City of Wilkes-Barre City Clerk’s Office, 40 East Market St. Wilkes-Barre, PA. Complete as per instructions, providing any/all supporting documentation, such as a valid PA Driver’s license, DD214, Fire Science Degree, PA EMT license, and PA Firefighter I Certification.

2)      Successfully pass a physical agility exam by invitation to applicants successfully passing the (online) written exam.

This application period will end on August 15, 2024, and applications or tests completed or returned after the close of business on that date will not be accepted.

Due to a change in the entry-level testing process, any fees previously collected by the City of Wilkes-Barre will be returned to the applicant. The City of Wilkes-Barre will not charge a fee. All Wilkes-Barre City Firefighters are also required to establish and maintain residency following a probationary period of one year following hire.

Testing will be done at Nationaltestingnetwork.com > find jobs > choose position > State > Wilkes-Barre City Bureau of Fire. Please note that National Testing charges a fee to take this exam. Test results remain valid for one year from the date of the exam with National Testing. However, the test results are valid for the Wilkes-Barre City Bureau of Fire for this application period only. This period closes on August 15, 2024. Valid applications with passing tests and physical agility exams completed/submitted prior to August 15, 2024, will be eligible for placement on a certified hiring list, valid for at least two years.

Position Title: Firefighter-EMT

Wilkes-Barre City Bureau of Fire is hiring for the position of Firefighter-EMT. Candidates are required to complete NTN’s FireTEAM exam by August 15th to be considered for the role.

Candidates must also complete a Department Application at the City Clerk’s Office, 40 East Market St., Wilkes-Barre, PA 18701

Salary Information: $52,536 annually

Department Overview: The Wilkes-Barre City Bureau of Fire is a career, and the “All Hazards” department is committed to providing the best possible service to city residents and visitors. The Bureau is staffed by 66 full-time firefighters/EMTs and eight paramedics. Three fire stations house four Advanced Life Support ambulances, five engines, two aerial trucks, and the command vehicle. The Bureau is responsible for fire suppression, rescue, EMS, fire prevention, and fire safety education.

Area Information: Wilkes-Barre is a city in and the county seat of Luzerne County. Wilkes-Barre City was founded in 1769 and incorporated as a borough in 1806. Wilkes-Barre has a diverse population of over 44,000 residents and covers seven square miles. Wilkes-Barre City is the home to Wilkes University and King’s College, and it has a combined campus census of nearly 4,000 students.

Necessary Certifications: Upon being hired as a recruit firefighter, successful completion and graduation from the Fire Academy are required. This includes the successful completion of NIMS 100, NIMS 200, Haz Mat Awareness, Haz Mat Ops, Firefighter I, Firefighter II, CPR, and NR-EMT.

Additional Requirements: Though not a requirement at the time of application, upon successful employment with WBFD, all recruits must be able to offer proof of residency within one year after completing their probationary period. This is a contractual requirement with the IAFF Local 104.

Preference Points:

US VETERAN’S PREFERENCE points for veteran’s preference will be added to the scores of eligible veterans who pass the examination and have completed at least one full term of service. You must be honorably discharged from the U.S. armed forces. Add a DD214 to your application if you wish for your eligibility to be reviewed. Applicants who are claiming Veteran’s Preference must supply proof of service and honorable discharge at the time of application.

Applicants claiming preference points must submit proof along with their application for the following:

o   -Associate’s Degree in Fire Science Technology from an accredited   institution for higher learning (2 pts)

o   -Current Pennsylvania Emergency Technician Certification (2 pts)

o   -PA Firefighter I Certification (1Pt)

Work Schedule: Firefighters and EMTs operate on a four-platoon system. They work three 9-hour days, followed by three 15-hour nights, with three days off between tours.
