Position Overview: The Environmental Public Health Manager at Communities for a Healthy Bay will play a vital role in leading and advancing the organization’s policy campaigns and initiatives. The primary focus of this role will be to promote public health and address environmental issues through research, policy development, community engagement, and advocacy efforts. The Environmental Public Health Manager will work closely with the Executive Director and other stakeholders to drive positive change and improve the overall well-being of our community.
- Lead and advance CHB’s policy campaigns:
- Conduct research and analysis on environmental health issues.
- Draft comment letters, policy reports, and recommendations.
- Testify at public meetings and hearings.
- Prepare and deliver presentations on key issues.
- Actively participate in key meetings related to policy development and advocacy.
- Staff the Policy & Technical Advisory Committee (a volunteer group of advisors comprised of experts in biology, chemistry, oceanography, hydrogeology, environmental monitoring, sustainability and law.):
- Organize topics and create agendas for PTAC meetings.
- Recruit guest speakers and subject matter experts.
- Foster engagement and collaboration among PTAC members.
- Contribute to the development of strategies and initiatives recommended by PTAC.
- Recruit technical specialists to be part of PTAC.
- Maintain and advance policy partnerships:
- Build and nurture relationships with local, state, and federal stakeholders and elected officials.
- Collaborate with external organizations and government agencies.
- Work towards dismantling systems of oppression and promoting diversity within CHB’s internal and external networks.
- Represent CHB at community forums, events, and initiatives:
Serve as a liaison between CHB and the community.
- Participate in public forums and events to raise awareness of environmental health issues.
- Contribute to community engagement efforts and initiatives.
- Prepare grant proposals and reports:
- Develop and submit grant proposals for CHB’s core programs.
- Monitor program performance and prepare reports associated with areas of responsibility.
- Assist in producing newsletter articles, press releases, and other written materials related to grant-funded activities.
- Contribute to CHB’s communications, education and fundraising efforts:
- Support the organization’s Director of Communications in drafting strategic communications content.
- Work alongside Community Education Coordinator and Bay Patrol team to advocate for key programming.
- Assist in developing fundraising strategies and donor cultivation activities.
- Recruit and supervise interns:
- Identify internship needs and recruit suitable candidates.
- Provide supervision, mentorship, and guidance to interns.
- Oversee and review interns’ work.
- Undertake special projects as requested by the Executive Director:
- Collaborate on special initiatives and research projects.
- Provide support in other areas as needed.
Strengths and Qualifications:

- Strong background in public health and/or environmental sciences and understanding of the intersection of public and environmental health; an ideal candidate has professional experience or graduate study of nursing or public health and experience with environmental policy.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and comfort with public speaking; ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences.
- Exceptional writing, research, and analytical skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines; strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and function well with a diverse team.
- Experience developing, executing, measuring, and reporting success of projects.
- Experience fundraising, including grant writing and management.
- Ability to learn quickly, take initiative and exercise sound judgment in making decisions and completing projects.
- Proven record of inclusive engagement; demonstrated competency working with diverse cultures; ability to build trust and create authentic relationships with a diverse range of people; ability to deal respectfully and constructively with people of divergent opinions.
The Environment and Public Health Policy Manager is a full-time position with a salary range of $55,000-$75,000 commensurate with experience. As a full-time employee, the Policy and Technical Project Manager is eligible for benefits described in the CHB Employee Handbook, including paid holidays, sick leave, and health and dental insurance.
