Position Description: Field Director

The Eli Northrup for Assembly campaign is seeking a dedicated and experienced Field Director to play a pivotal role in leading our campaign team ahead of the competitive June 2024 Primary.

The Field Director will build and execute an innovative, data-driven voter mobilization program through the implementation of a direct voter contact effort. The Field Director will be responsible for managing all aspects of the campaign’s field strategy, including but not limited to developing and ensuring the successful implementation of the Field Plan, spearheading grasstops outreach, managing volunteers and day-to-day canvassing, phone banking, relational organizing and other operations, and working directly with the candidate, campaign consultants, staff, and vendors. This position reports to the Campaign Director.

About the Campaign: Eli Northrup is a public defender and policy advocate running for Assembly in New York’s 69th Assembly District, which encompasses the Upper West Side and Morningside Heights. The June 2024 primary will be an open race as the incumbent is not seeking re-election.

Location: Upper West Side and Morningside Heights, Manhattan, New York; In-person work is required.

Type: Independent contractor; 40–60+ hours per week; Regular work during evenings and weekends is expected.

Compensation: $5,000-$7,000 per month, commensurate with experience.

Start Date: As soon as possible, preferably by February 27, 2024

End Date: June 30, 2024, with a possibility to extend the contract until November 2024.

Responsibilities

  1. Field Planning: Collaborate with strategic partners to create and execute a field plan that meets ambitious voter contact goals, including, but not limited to: phone banking, relational organizing, text banking, canvassing, and community events. Re-evaluate and tailor the field plan as needed.
  2. Volunteer Recruitment, Training and Management: Utilize candidate’s network, personal network, and local connections to recruit, train, and manage campaign volunteers. Secure commitments throughout the campaign cycle and delegate relevant tasks. Train volunteers in phone banking, field canvassing, and relational organizing as well as technical use of miniVAN and REACH apps.
  3. Field Execution: Directly oversee day-to-day field operations, including in person canvasses, phone banking, and volunteer-lead relational organizing.
  4. Messaging: Craft messaging for use in voter contact, in sync with mail and digital messaging. Regularly monitor how messaging is received in the field and modify it based on success and feedback.
  5. Petitioning: Manage volunteer petitioning during petitioning period, including quality control of petitions.
  6. Travel: Work in person and virtually. Travel in Manhattan regularly.

Essential Qualifications

  • Prior campaign cycle as a Field Director on a local campaign, or Regional Organizing Director or Field Manager on a larger campaign
    Prior experience developing data-driven field strategy and a campaign field plan, including identifying strategic voter universes
  • Technical expertise in Votebuilder, MiniVAN, Peer-to-Peer Call and SMS Software
  • Exceptional  direct voter contact and volunteer management skills
  • Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Strong time management abilities with a proven track record of meeting deadlines
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Discretion and independent judgment in decision-making
  • Ability to work tactfully with the public
  • Values aligned with Eli’s commitment to social justice and campaign goals
  • Working phone and laptop

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with the neighborhoods of the 69th Assembly District
  • Experience with relational organizing and using REACH
  • Technical expertise in all or some of the following: GetThru (ThruTalk, ThruText), Switchboard SMS
