Atmos is a nonprofit media organization dedicated to the exploration of climate and culture. We publish a biannual magazine and daily stories on our website and social media platforms, curated by a global ecosystem of artists, activists, and writers devoted to ecological and social justice, creative storytelling, and re-enchantment with the natural world.
Overview:
We are seeking a dynamic and visionary Site Director to lead the website of our non-profit media organization, which focuses on exploring the intersection of climate change and culture. As the Site Director, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the editorial direction, managing day-to-day operations, and fostering a collaborative and innovative environment for the Atmos site. You will manage all content across the site including editorial, contributors, and e-commerce. This is a unique opportunity for an individual passionate about sustainability, cultural discourse, and leveraging digital media for positive change.
Responsibilities:
Strategic Planning:
- Collaborate with leadership team to develop and implement long-term strategic plans that drive the growth and impact of the Atmos web site
- Identify emerging trends and opportunities within the climate and culture space.
- Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including contributors, partner organizations, and industry experts.
- Oversee the translation of print stories to digital.
Editorial Leadership:
- With the editor-in-chief, develop and then execute the editorial vision, ensuring content aligns with the organization’s mission and resonates with the target audience.
- Oversee the planning, creation, and publication of engaging and thought-provoking articles, features, and multimedia content on the website including ownership of the site editorial calendar.
- Sign off on all stories published on the Atmos website. This includes editing text as well as ensuring articles are published with all necessary components such as correct credits, captions, and visuals, and laid out according to Atmos’s visual identity and standards.
- Write and/or commission stories as time allows.
- Own and manage the publication of all Atmos newsletters.
Team Management:
- Recruit, mentor, and lead a talented team of writers and editors as their department head.
- Foster a positive and inclusive work environment that encourages the Atmos principles: Biodiverse, Adaptive, Symbiotic, and Kinetic.
- Perform bi-annual check-ins with all supervisees, while providing ongoing feedback throughout the year.
- Participate in organizational trainings and model learned skills for the editorial team.
- Maintain documentation for all departmental workflows on a regular basis.
Website Management:
- Own the development and maintenance of the Atmos web site including new features, updates, and the prompt resolution of website bugs.
- Collaborate with the creative team on site design direction and implement updates and re-designs with the development partner
- Maintain the ecommerce section of the Atmos website, including updating with new products as launched
- Ensure all editorial areas of the Atmos web site are robust, up-to-date, and optimized, including topic pages, contributor pages, and magazine landing pages.
Budget Management:
- Manage assigned budgets effectively, ensuring resources are allocated efficiently for maximum impact.
Audience Development:
- Utilize analytics tools to measure the performance of content, audience engagement, and overall platform metrics to ensure that stories are resonating with our audience as well as expanding it.
- Employ an effective SEO strategy to make sure that stories are reaching the widest audience possible.
- Implement data-driven insights to refine strategies and improve outcomes, adjusting our editorial approach as more data becomes available.
- Develop content distribution strategy and partnerships. Share stories regularly with content distribution partners to increase traffic, and collaborate with social team to ensure all stories are promoted across platforms.
- Make use of and create a strategy for utilizing Atmos’s newsletter subscriber base for sending out articles published on the website.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, environmental studies, or a related field. Master’s degree is a plus.
- Proven experience in editorial leadership, preferably in the context of sustainability, climate change, or cultural publications.
- Strong understanding of digital media, content creation, content distribution, and SEO strategies, as well as the technical aspects of website development and optimization. Experience with visuals is a plus
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and inspire a team in a collaborative and fast-paced environment.
- Passion for and knowledge of the intersection of climate change and culture.
- Strategic thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Familiarity with non-profit operations and funding mechanisms is desirable.
Salary and Benefits:
Range $92,000 – $136,000
