Job Description:

SUMMARY

This is limited technical work assisting in the receiving, storing, issuing, and distribution of utilities materials and supplies of a multi-utility warehouse.

Positions allocated to this classification report to a designated supervisor and may take direction from and work closely with more senior staff. Work in this class is distinguished from higher classes by its reduced complexity, responsibility and experience with products, and from lower classes by its emphasis on learning all aspects of material handling at a multi-function utility.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Depending on the area of assignment:

Responsible for assisting in the daily operation of the warehouse(s) by receiving, inspecting, storing, issuing, shipping, and delivering parts, supplies and tools in and out of the warehouse.

Responsible for keeping all storage areas clean, orderly and properly stocked.

Assists higher level personnel in the proper salvage, disposal, and recycling of any materials returned to the warehouse from operational departments and assisting in returning items to inventory.

Responsible for the proper use and maintenance of a variety of non-powered and powered tools and equipment, including, but not limited to, forklifts, trucks and wire coiling machines. Duties include the safe operation, routine inspection, care, and basic maintenance of all equipment.

Responsible for preparing reports and record keeping of inspection results for submission to supervisory personnel.

Responsible for the safe handling, maintenance, and use of all warehouse equipment and materials, including, but not limited to, all materials issued with a Safety Data Sheet (SDS), hazardous chemicals, first aid kits, eye wash stations, and safety showers.

Responsible for providing high quality service to all internal and external customers and vendors by retaining and following oral and written instructions from supervisors and higher-level staff to properly identify requested parts and materials from operational areas and effectively communicating with other personnel.

Responsible for maintaining accurate inventory balances and responding to inquiries from customers and other personnel by performing data look up or entry into appropriate inventory control systems.

Responsible for assisting in completing emergency preparedness procedures.

Responsible for following all department and organizational policies and procedures to safely and effectively perform all job duties.

Will be required to respond under emergency and non-emergency conditions or work outside assigned work hours to meet operational needs.

Controls and verifies source documents related to issue and receipt of goods from inventory and ensures accountability of quantities and cost.

Performs many of the functions that support daily warehouse activities on an as-needed basis.

Attends work on continuous and regular basis.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalently diploma, plus one (1) year of experience in warehousing or stores related work within a computerized inventory environment, as well as experience in the operation of powered materials handling equipment.

Must successfully complete GRU craft training requirements for the Utilities Materials Specialist I as established in the Progression-Through-Training- Program.

CERTIFICATIONS OR LICENSES

Licenses

Possesses and maintains appropriate valid Florida Driver License.

A CDL instructional permit is required at the time of appointment and a CDL License will be required within six months of date of appointment.

Certifications

City of Gainesville forklift certification required within three months of date of appointment.

Must complete GRU craft and safety training requirements for the Utilities Materials Specialist I position as established within the Progression – Through – Training Program (PTTP) and departmental standards.
