Job Description:
SUMMARY
This is a position requiring a registered nurse with advanced academic and clinical experience which enables the incumbent to diagnose and manage most common and many chronic illnesses and injuries. The nurse practitioner provides some care previously offered only by a physician and has the ability to prescribe medications. Working in collaboration with a physician, a nurse practitioner provides high-quality, cost-effective and individualized care for a patient’s needs.
The position allocated to this class performs functions previously performed by a physician, including diagnosing and treating illnesses and injuries, and prescribing medications that lower-level nursing positions are prevented from doing. Work is distinguished from higher level positions by the requirement to work under the general direction of a Medical Doctor.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Directs and performs patient care using protocols approved by the Medical Director, consistent with Federal and State law and City Policy, both work related, and non-work related.
Demonstrates “Hands On” capability as health care provider.
Supervises staff in performance of their duties.
Prescribes medications as allowed by law.
Participates in “health fairs” and off-site clinics, some of which are performed outside of normal work hours.
Communicates with workers comp and other Risk Management personnel to maximize in house treatment and minimize loss time.
Coordinates with other Risk Management personnel to maximize department’s wellness capabilities.
Communicates with outside providers involved in patient care.
Performs physical exams and assessments.
Documents according to Federal, State, and City guidelines.
Follows appropriate safety and infection control measures when providing patient care.
Actively participates in daily coordination of patient care, scheduling and documentation.
Acquires and maintains thorough knowledge of DOT and City physical standards.
Acquires and maintains thorough understanding of DOT and City Drug and Alcohol testing programs.
Implements DOT and City Drug and Alcohol testing program on a daily basis.
Acquires and maintains thorough knowledge of Family and Medical Leave Act.
Acquires and maintains thorough knowledge of HIPPA.
Acquires and maintains working knowledge of Workers Comp regulations in order to provide effective care for on the job injured employees.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in nursing. Certification as APRN or ARNP with ability to prescribe medications, and three (3) to five (5) years advanced practice nursing experience in a Primary Care, Family Practice, or Occupational Medicine environment. Prefer occupational health experience and a valid Occupational Health Certification. Master’s degree preferred in field of Nursing.
CERTIFICATIONS OR LICENSES
Licenses
Valid State of Florida driver license with good driving record required at time of hire.
Valid Florida Registered Nurse license.
Certifications
National Certification by either AANP or ANCC and certification as an Autonomous APRN with the State of Florida with a current certification to prescribe at time of hire.
