Job Summary
Make an impact: The City of Salem Police Department has a new exciting opportunity! We seek candidates for the Community Services Officer (CSO) position to assist the public or sworn police officers with civil or property complaints where enforcement or arrest powers are not required.
What you will do: As a CSO, you will travel to meet citizens, inspect neighborhoods, noise, non-violent domestic problems, or health complaints to assess the magnitude of the problem, and offer mitigation or resolution options. In this position, you will respond to non-injury accidents and assist in facilitating the exchange of information, maintain traffic safety, and prepare non-injury traffic reports with the removal of vehicles. This position will record information for police reports and record citizen concerns and/or suggestions to enhance law enforcement effectiveness.
Additional information on job responsibilities:
The work is performed in an office and in the field. It involves inclement weather, traveling from location to location, moving over uneven surfaces and high-traffic areas, and interacting with upset individuals.
NOTE: This is a part-time career position. Shift assignments are three consecutive 8-hour shifts that are bid by seniority as per the SPEU contract. Initial training will be 40 hours per week. Part-time career positions are eligible for participation in the City of Salem benefits programs, including health insurance and sick, vacation, and holiday leave accruals, at a rate based on the percentage of hours worked.

What are the minimum qualifications?
- Must pass a pre-employment background check and drug test (including marijuana).
- Must be at least 18 years of age to apply.
- Must have an Oregon Class C driver’s license and a driving record meeting the City of Salem’s driving standards.
- High school degree or G.E.D. certificate, and training or work experience in mediation skill or social work, providing the ability to deal with individuals and groups with understanding, tact, and courtesy, or any combination of experience and training that demonstrates possession of the knowledge, skill, and abilities as listed, and ability to perform the examples of work.
- Must participate in defensive tactics training, which includes being sprayed with oleoresin capsicum, to receive certification.

- Must pass criminal background check necessary to obtain Criminal Justice Information System clearance and Law Enforcement Data System certification within 30 days of hire (clearance must be maintained throughout employment)
- What are the Preferred Qualifications?
- Bilingual in Spanish, Russian, or Southeast Asian languages.
