Development Associate

Alexandria, VA (position can be hybrid work-from-home and in-office, with at least one day a week working in the office.)

REPRO Rising Virginia (RRVA) seeks a full-time Development Associate to support our state-level advocacy, organizing, political, and elections work for reproductive rights and health care access by raising revenue for programming through individual donations and fundraising events. The Development Associate will be a key member of the development team, working closely with our Development Director to ensure RRVA secures steady and sufficient funding to achieve our mission of protecting and expanding reproductive freedom in Virginia.

Who We Are

REPRO Rising Virginia is a strong and trusted leader in the fight to establish laws and policies that ensure real, reliable, affordable, and timely access to abortion, contraception, and other reproductive health services for every person in Virginia. We work with community and state-based partners to connect this work to a broader reproductive health, rights, and justice agenda. In our efforts, we seek to center the needs and voices of those most affected by reproductive injustice and to deepen our understanding and practice of intersectionality and justice, in both our internal practice and external programs. Ultimately, we seek to ensure that every person in the Commonwealth of Virginia has access to comprehensive and high-quality reproductive health information and services free of stigma or coercion.

We are an independent, community-based, advocacy organization leading the charge for reproductive rights and freedom across the Commonwealth. As of January 2022, we are no longer affiliated with NARAL Pro-Choice America. As part of that transition, our partners, staff, Board members and community members helped us to outline our core values and vision.

We have also considered the core elements of our organizational culture, recognizing that we are a team of progressive people deeply committed to reproductive rights and freedom. Our team is collaborative and supportive; we encourage asking for help when it is needed and often pitch in across teams when things get busy. We are diverse and visionary thinkers. We value diversity of lived experience, and we welcome bold and creative ideas and ensure space to test those ideas. We own areas of work and decisions within a collaborative team. We believe that a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace makes us a more creative and more resilient organization.

RRVA is made up of three entities: our main 501(c)(4) policy and political arm; the 501(c)(3) REPRO Rising Virginia Foundation, which oversees our issue advocacy, culture change and education programming; and the REPRO Rising Virginia Political Action Committee which works to elect pro-reproductive freedom candidates. Our staff of 12 is located across our offices in Alexandria, Richmond, and Hampton Roads. Learn more about us here.

Your Role
REPRO Rising Virginia is at a critical moment of opportunity and the Development Associate will have a significant impact on scaling and streamlining our development efforts, refreshing some of our strategies, and incorporating more equitable and inclusive development practices.  Reporting to the Development Director, you will perform work in the following core areas:

·         Donation Processing and Database Management (45%) – You are responsible for processing donations and acknowledgement letters, tracking donor information, and working with the bookkeeper to reconcile our donor database with our accounting software. As database manager, you will learn the ins and outs of our database, eventually becoming proficient in order to optimize data capture, run mailing lists, and create analytic reports to inform the development team’s fundraising and stewardship efforts.

·         Event Planning (30%) – You lead the planning and execution of all fundraising and stewardship events, as well as manage logistics for our board meetings. You will be working with board members and donors to plan the majority of our fundraising events. As the lead on event planning, you will need to recruit event committee members, schedule and facilitate meetings (sometimes outside of typical business hours), and ensure the planning is on track.

·         Donor Stewardship Coordination (15%) – You are instrumental in coordinating the organization’s stewardship efforts. Working with the development director, executive director, and boards of directors, you will create and implement a stewardship plan that will deepen our donors’ engagement in and value of our work. You will keep abreast of stewardship trends in the sector and implement new ideas as current thinking evolves.

·         General Development & Boards of Directors Support (10%) – You are responsible for the foundational tasks needed to ensure a smooth-running development program and support of the boards of directors. This includes monitoring development communication lines (phone, email, and mail), ensuring development supplies are stocked, and providing the executive director, development director, and the boards of directors with the information needed for them to perform their duties, such as running donor and fundraising reports, researching prospective donors, and assisting with onboarding of new board members. This person will also work with the development director to create an annual development plan.

Who You Are
To thrive in this role, you bring experience in the following areas and enjoy using these skills:

·         Detail-Oriented: You’re meticulous and act as your own proofreader – always double checking your work. While you have lots on your plate, you know that multi-tasking rarely results in a good, finished product and you give projects your full attention whenever possible.

·         Take Initiative: You’re proactive and a problem solver. You enjoy thinking ahead, anticipating complications, and making contingency plans. You often anticipate needs (for yourself, your team, an event host, etc.) before anyone else has even identified them. You are resourceful and able to solve problems creatively.

·         Strong Communicator: You clearly express ideas, thoughts, and feedback verbally and in writing. You’re not afraid to ask questions and you keep others well-informed with status updates. You are comfortable communicating internally and externally, via a variety of channels (phone, email, and text). You know your audience and are comfortable adjusting your tone accordingly.

·         Organized: You’re a planner. You love making lists (and calendars, and spreadsheets, and binders…) to organize yourself and others. You enjoy improving systems and processes to help streamline workflow and reduce inefficiency. You are comfortable project managing with a variety of players, including other RRVA teams, board members, and major donors.

·         Data Wonk: You love data and working in databases. You enjoy optimizing current database features and finding new ones, in order to pull more comprehensive reports, analyze donor trends, and streamline regular tasks, such as running contribution reports and creating mailing lists. You understand the importance of clean data and timely data entry as foundations of a strong fundraising and stewardship program.

A Note to Potential Candidates: Studies have shown that women, trans, non-binary folks, and BIPOC are less likely to apply for jobs unless they believe they meet every single one of the qualifications as described in a job description. We are committed to building a diverse and inclusive organization, and strongly encourage you to apply, even if you don’t believe you meet every one of the qualifications described.
