The Greeley Fire Department is seeking qualified applicants with two or more years of career firefighter experience to establish an eligibility list for the full-time Lateral Firefighter/Paramedic position.

The City of Greeley Fire Department provides an ‘All Hazards’ emergency response for a population of over 115,000 citizens and covers a response area of 64 square miles. The Department responds to over 18,000 emergency calls from seven fire stations and is comprised of 133 personnel. The Department provides Advanced Life Support Service at the Paramedic level and partners with an ambulance contractor who provides transport services.

Firefighters/Paramedics perform individually and/or as a member of a team and participate in activities in the following areas:  combating, extinguishing, and preventing fires; responding to emergency medical and traffic accident calls and other related public assistance activities; performing routine custodial maintenance of fire department equipment, apparatus, and facilities.

Minimum Requirements:

  • 21 years of age at the time of application deadline.
  • High school diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED).
  • A minimum of 2 years of full-time experience as a firefighter (within the last 12 months) with a career fire service agency (state, county, municipal or special district) whose primary responsibility is fire protection and emergency medical service.
  • Successful job performance and no prior disciplinary action within the prior two years of experience (Copies of performance evaluations may be required as part of the background verification).
  • Possession of the following certifications (Copies must be provided at the time of application): Current State of Colorado or National Registry Paramedic Certification.
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support Health Care Provider.
  • Current American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support Provider card.
  • Firefighter II (Must meet ProBoard/IFSAC Accreditation).
  • Hazardous Materials Awareness/Operations (Must meet ProBoard/IFSAC Accreditation).
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the City of Greeley’s driving records policy.
  • State of Colorado license is required by the hire date.
  • Must be able to pass a comprehensive pre-employment background check, criminal history, motor vehicle record review, and drug screen utilizing the following criteria: No felony convictions or conviction involving moral turpitude.
  • No felonious drug usage or related activities within the previous five years.
  • No use of marijuana within the last two years.
  • No arrest for DUI, DWAI, or DUID within the last five years.

  • Operates or is a passenger in an emergency vehicle responding to fire, accident, or medical emergency scenes.
  • Awkward and cramped positions to perform tasks normally associated with this position.
  • Responds to fire, accident, or medical emergency scenes at any time during the work schedule.
  • Can work in adverse conditions (e.g., weather, around fuels, oils, cleaning fluids and fumes, extreme heat and cold).
  • Provides specialized training to Department members if qualified.
  • Maintains physical fitness according to Department standards.
  • Presents safety and informational presentations to the public.
  • Operates computers for record-keeping, documentation, and communication.
  • Lateral Firefighter Hiring Timeline:
  • April 1st- Application period opens.
  • June 7th, 2024 – Deadline to submit an application (5:00 pm).
  • Week of July 22-26 – in-person interviews, skills assessments, and Chief Interviews.
  • Week of July 29 – conditional job offers via email.
  • Week of July 29 – pre-employment testing (backgrounds/DMV).
  • Week of August 5 – in-person medical evaluations, fitness/wellness assessment (Front Line Medical).
  • Week of August 12, 2024 – a final job offer.
  • September 12, 2024, is the official hire date and the start of the lateral academy.

  2. Step Two: Interviews & Skills Assessment:  Candidates who meet the minimum requirements may be invited to participate in the Skills Assessment and Interview process.
  3. NOTE: Preference points will be awarded to the scores of Military Veterans who provide proper documentation, such as a DD Form 214. Five (5) preference points will be added to the overall score of those qualified candidates who pass each section.

Preference points will be awarded to the scores for fluency in a second language. Four (4) preference points for fluency or two (2) preference points for partial fluency will be added to the overall score of candidates who demonstrate proficiency during a scheduled skills evaluation.

Post Conditional Job Offer – Pre-hiring Minimum Requirements:

Must be able to pass the medical evaluation by the department Physician (NFPA 1582 Standard).

  • Be in good physical condition and possess or obtain a current Candidate
  • Physical Ability Test (CPAT) prior to a final job offer. Candidates who do not already possess a current CPAT card can visit for more information and to schedule a Candidate Physical Ability Test through Aims Community College or the City of Greeley will arrange for a CPAT exam for candidates prior to a final job offer if applicable.
  • Pass the Greeley Fire Department Annual fitness/wellness assessment.
  • Pass the designated psychological screening process.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Skill in communicating effectively both orally and in writing, using tact and diplomacy.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships in a team environment.
  • Prior to their final job offer, candidates must have submitted copies of all current certifications, as required.


  • Those selected for employment will be paid to attend the current lateral fire academy.
  • Those placed on the eligibility list will remain on the list for twelve (12) months. At the request of the fire chief and approval by the Civil Service Commission, the eligibility list may be extended for an additional twelve (12) months.

Post Hiring Requirements:

  • Successful completion of the current Lateral Firefighter Academy; and,
  • Must be certified as a Fire Fighter II by the State of Colorado within 12 months of hire, maintain that certification; and,
  • Must be certified at State of Colorado Hazardous Materials Awareness/Operations within 12 months of hire; maintain that certification; and
  • Possess or obtain and maintain State of Colorado Paramedic certification; and,
  • Must complete the Medical Director approved program to practice as a Paramedic for Greeley Fire Department immediately upon completing the post-academy training process.
