The Trenton Police Department is currently seeking candidates for the position of Emergency Services Dispatcher (ESD). Entry-level positions will be filled through testing. Candidates must complete the required national exam and the application packet. Experienced applicants with one year or more of full-time ESD experience may apply as lateral entry candidates and are not required to take the test. Lateral entry candidates must submit a résumé with their application packets.
Application packets are available at the Trenton Police Department website and from the City of Trenton Administrative offices. All applications must be submitted no later than 3:00 PM on Thursday, October 17, 2024. Salary Information:
Full-Time: $51,937 – $62,004 annually, with a top-out salary of $65,998 in January 2025. A signing bonus may be negotiable for well-qualified, experienced candidates.
Part-Time: $18.00 – $24.09 per hour.
Benefits Information:
Comprehensive benefits package. All equipment and initial uniform items are provided. Full-time employees receive a $500 yearly uniform allowance.
Department Overview:
The City of Trenton Communications Center dispatches emergency first responders for police, fire, and EMS services. It also serves as the after-hours contact for all City departments.
Area Information:
The City of Trenton covers over 5 square miles in Butler County, Ohio, located between Middletown and Hamilton. It is approximately 20 minutes from Miami University’s Oxford campus.

Hiring Process:
Entry-level candidates must pass a national exam. Experienced applicants with one year or more of full-time ESD experience may apply as lateral entry candidates without testing. All candidates must complete an oral review panel, drug and alcohol screening, background investigation, and medical and psychological exams. Applications must be submitted no later than 3:00 PM on Thursday, October 17, 2024.
Disqualifiers:
Felony Convictions: No felony convictions.
Drug Use: No felony or pervasive misdemeanor drug use.
Financial Issues: Any bankruptcy must be more than five years old.
Job Description – Emergency Services Dispatcher:
Serves as the first point of contact for citizens entering the police station.
Receives and transmits radio communications, dispatching police, fire, and life squad units to the appropriate locations.
Responds to emergency and non-emergency requests from service agencies and the public.
Maintains records, operates office equipment, and enters data into various databases.
Handles LEADS/NCIC correspondence, entries, and deletions, and assists with training sessions.
Receives and processes payments for bonds, impounds, and public records.
Monitors individuals in holding cells and maintains reports.
Performs other related duties as assigned by a supervisor.
Licensure or Certification Requirements:
LEADS and CCH certification must be obtained within the first three months.
State of Ohio Notary certification must be obtained within the first six months.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to work independently and handle multiple tasks accurately under pressure.
Knowledge of FCC rules, LEADS/NCIC systems, and public safety procedures.
Skill in operating radio, computer, and office equipment.
Ability to communicate clearly, troubleshoot problems, and learn new skills quickly.
Must pass random drug and alcohol testing.
Physical/Mental Abilities and Work Environment:
Work Setting: Normal office environment.
Scheduling: Requires 24/7 availability and may require work in excess of 40 hours as necessary.
Physical Activity: Includes sitting, standing, repetitive motions, attention to detail, and ability to handle tasks in a fast-paced environment.
This job requires consistent attention, focus, and adherence to established protocols in a timely manner while performing dispatch duties.
