Job Classification: Entry-level or Lateral Firefighter/Paramedic

Candidates must possess a State of Ohio EMT-Basic certification and be enrolled in an accredited paramedic program. Candidates must achieve State of Ohio Certified Paramedic status within six months from the appointment date or have this certification prior to appointment.

The City of Napoleon Fire Department is maintaining a continuous list for Entry Level or Lateral Firefighter/Paramedic positions. This process allows candidates who apply and complete the necessary steps to remain on the Civil Service list for two years. The following steps are required for consideration:

Complete the Personal History Questionnaire (PHQ) on the National Testing Network’s (NTN) website.
Pass the FireTeam written exam through NTN with a minimum average score of 70%.
Obtain a Firefighter Mile certification at the time of application or before appointment. Candidates with a certification within two years of appointment are exempt from obtaining a new one.
Lateral transfer candidates who are participating in the Ohio Police and Fire pension are exempt from completing the Firefighter Mile Certification.

Candidates with a passing score may earn up to 10% extra credit (5% per qualification) if they provide proof at the time of application. Qualifying criteria include veteran status, a college degree, Firefighter II certification, or three years of part-time employment with Napoleon Fire & Rescue.

Salary Information:
$55,547.84-$67,856.19 across four steps (each step represents one year with Paramedic Pay included). Firefighter/paramedics work a 24/48 schedule based on a 50-hour work week. Lateral candidates (Firefighter/Paramedic) will be offered a pay step commensurate with their years of service, as follows:

Step A: $55,547.84
Step B: $59,518.22
Step C: $63,522.28
Step D: $67,856.19
Benefits Information: Comprehensive medical coverage, life insurance, uniform allowance, 10 paid holidays, 11 Kelly Days, 4 personal days, 2 vacation days after 1 year, and 5 vacation days after 2 years. Pension benefits through the Ohio Police and Fire Pension Fund. Lateral candidates receive 48 hours of vacation upon hire and accrue vacation based on prior service during the first year.

Department Overview:
Napoleon Fire & Rescue is a progressive combination fire department consisting of 28 employees, including 11 full-time and 17 part-time members. The department provides fire suppression, advanced life support emergency and non-emergency medical services, technical rescue, high and low angle rope, confined space, vehicle/machinery, and hazardous materials response. It covers the City of Napoleon and surrounding townships, covering a total area of 53 square miles. In 2021, the department responded to 1,936 calls for service.

Population: Approximately 11,750 in the coverage area.

Driver’s License: Must obtain and maintain a valid Ohio State Driver’s License within 30 days of hire.
Ability to Read/Speak English: Fluent in written and spoken English
Vision: Must have good vision with or without corrective measures
Academy Certification: Must have State of Ohio EMT-Basic certification and be enrolled in an accredited paramedic program. Certification as a State of Ohio Paramedic is required within six months of appointment or before. Must obtain a State of Ohio Fire Safety Inspector Certification or Hazard Recognition Certification within 24 months.
Prior Experience: Not required, but preferred
Necessary Certifications: Must maintain Ohio-required certifications in Emergency Medical Services as per job classification.
