Announcement for Entry-Level Police Officer and Lateral Transfer Examination and Selection Process
Application Period: Open for applications. The City of Piqua is an Equal Employment Opportunity employer.
Examination Test:
The exam is conducted through the National Testing Network (NTN) at various locations. Registration is required before testing. For available testing locations and scheduling, visit the NTN website. The closest testing site to Piqua is Edison Community College, located at 1973 Edison Drive, Room 115, Piqua, Ohio.
Examination Details:
The written test is electronic and lasts approximately two to two and a half hours. Identification with a state-issued driver’s license or military ID is required.
No cell phones or recording devices are allowed in the testing room. Calculators, scratch paper, or other aids are also prohibited.
A minimum score of 70% is required to pass. Those who do not achieve the minimum score will be notified.
Cheating or any violation of testing protocol will result in immediate disqualification.
Examination fees are set by NTN and are due upon registration.
Application for Entry-Level / Lateral Transfer Police Officer Position:
The application process involves the following steps:
Meet Minimum Requirements: Applicants must meet all qualifications outlined in the application packet.
Complete Application: Submit the City of Piqua application online via the Human Resources Department’s “Job Opportunities” tab. Required documents to upload:
Birth certificate
Education records (High School Diploma, GED, or college degree, if applicable)
“Job Functions Accommodation” form
Documentation of military service (if applicable)
Ohio Peace Officer Certificate (if applicable)
Eligibility List: After testing, eligible candidates will be placed on a list. Lateral transfers are exempt from this process.
Interviews and Testing: Candidates may undergo interviews, physical fitness tests, background checks, truth verification exams, behavioral assessments, and drug screening.
Conditional Employment: Candidates offered a position will then complete psychological and medical evaluations.
Eligibility List Duration: The list remains valid for twelve months.
Minimum Qualifications:
Age: Applicants must be at least 21 years old at the time of appointment. Candidates may take the test six months before their 21st birthday.
Education: High School Diploma or GED is required.
Citizenship: Must be a U.S. Citizen.
Driver’s License: Must have a valid Ohio driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.
Physical Condition: Must meet the physical fitness standards as specified.
Criminal Record: Certain convictions, such as DUI, felony offenses, or acts of violence, may disqualify applicants.
Additional Testing Requirements:
Truth Verification: Administered during the background investigation.
Psychological Testing: Conducted after a conditional offer.
Physical Fitness/Abilities Test: Administered based on eligibility list standards.
Lateral Entry:
Lateral applicants must have OPOTA certification, including firearms training, with at least one year of full-time experience with an Ohio state-certified law enforcement agency. Lateral candidates may receive a higher starting salary based on current wages.
Additional Credits for Entry-Level Examinations:
Applicants may receive additional points for their test score if they meet the following criteria:
Military Service Credits:Ten percent added for applicants with military service of at least 12 continuous months or an accumulative period of 18 months.
Candidates must provide notarized documentation (e.g., DD214) to receive credits.
Applicants must submit all documentation for additional credits along with the application by the specified deadline.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities – Police Officer
Responds to service calls, implements community policing strategies, and handles observed activities appropriately.
Conducts security checks on businesses and residences, taking necessary actions.
Enforces traffic laws, issues citations, and investigates traffic violations.
Investigates criminal and civil complaints, interviews involved parties, and gathers information.
Apprehends suspects, makes arrests, and processes prisoners. Patrols the city by various means, including car, bike, or on foot.
Prepares reports, maintains logs, and collects evidence at crime scenes.
Assists individuals with mental health crises.
Operates law enforcement equipment, including patrol car computers, radios, firearms, and speed-measuring devices.
Handles domestic disputes, interviews complainants, and testifies in court as needed.
Manages emergency calls, provides first aid or CPR, and maintains certification in LEADS correspondence and systems.
Meets OSHA safety standards and maintains regular attendance. Officers are on call 24/7.
Other Duties:
Participates in public presentations and training sessions.
Works special details, including school events and community festivals.
