Department Overview:
South Whidbey Fire/EMS serves a rural area in Island County, Washington, covering 66 square miles. It is one of three fire districts on Whidbey Island, with nearly all of its boundary adjacent to Puget Sound’s 57 miles of shoreline. The area includes lakes, saltwater marinas, parks, and a significant wildland-urban interface.
The climate features short, comfortable, and partly cloudy summers, with cool and wet winters. Temperatures range from 37°F to 76°F, rarely dropping below 27°F or exceeding 85°F, with an average annual rainfall of 43-45 inches.
The district is primarily rural, with Langley as the only incorporated municipality. The district’s population is 16,000, though it can reach up to 25,000 with tourists and daily visitors. The district operates one fully staffed central fire station, a second station staffed as needed, and four volunteer stations. The strategic plan includes staffing three stations as personnel increases over the next two years.
South Whidbey Fire/EMS provides BLS first response, while ambulance transport services are provided by Whidbey Health Hospital. Though the hospital is located in Coupeville, 15 miles north, an ambulance station within the district maintains two ALS ambulances.
