Job Classification: Full-Time Firefighter Paramedic

The Harlem-Roscoe Fire Protection District (HRFPD) is seeking candidates to establish a pool for the position of Full-Time Firefighter Paramedic. Candidates must complete the NTN Fireteam exam and submit the NTN PHQ/Application. All testing and documents are due by October 31, 2024.

Required Documents at the Time of Hire:

Basic Operations Firefighter or Advanced Technician Firefighter certification
Illinois Department of Public Health Paramedic License (or currently enrolled in a Paramedic Course, with certification required within two years of hire)
Valid Illinois Driver’s License
Current CPR Certification
CPAT with Ladder Climb Endorsement at the time of hire
HRFPD will contact candidates from the pool for further participation in the hiring process as needed.

Compensation and Benefits:

Starting Salary: $70,004 (plus a one-time $5,000 Paramedic Bonus after the probation period)

Department Information:
The Harlem-Roscoe Fire Protection District consists of approximately 25 Career Firefighters, along with Contract, Paid-on-Premises, and Paid-on-Call firefighters. HRFPD provides extensive training for its personnel and responds to over 3,900 calls annually, including fires, medical emergencies, vehicle accidents, and specialized rescues.

Area Information:
HRFPD serves an 85-square-mile area, covering Roscoe, Rockton, Argyle, and Machesney Park in Winnebago County, along with contracted areas in Boone County. The population served is approximately 30,000.

Job Requirements:

Age: Applicants must be at least 21 years old and not older than 35, unless exceptions apply according to Illinois law.
Citizenship: Must be a legal resident of the U.S. or a naturalized alien.
Education: High School Diploma, G.E.D. certificate, or equivalent.
Driver’s License: Valid Illinois Driver’s License.
Language: Ability to read, speak, and write in English.
Medical: Must pass a medical evaluation per NFPA 1582 standards.

Hiring Process:

Written Examination through NTN.
Oral Interview with the Board of Commissioners.

Meet the knowledge, health, and physical qualifications set by HRFPD.
Maintain good moral character, personal habits, and a strong work ethic.
Obtain OSFM Advanced Technician Firefighter certification within three years of hire.

Preference Points:

Military: 5 points
Residency: 5 points
Education: Up to 5 points based on degree (Bachelor’s or Associate’s)
Current Harlem-Roscoe Contract Personnel: 5 points
Experience: 0.5 points per year as Paid-on-Call with HRFPD (maximum of 5 points)
Total Preference Points: Not to exceed 25 points.
