The South Elgin & Countryside Fire Protection District Board of Commissioners is announcing the testing window to establish a Full-Time Eligibility List for firefighters.
Application Process
Applicants are required to complete the Public Safety Self-Assessment (PSSA) through the National Testing Network (NTN). In addition, applicants must complete the South Elgin & Countryside Fire Protection District Full-Time Application. Applications and supporting documentation must be uploaded to the NTN website or submitted in person at Station 21, located at 1090 West Spring St., South Elgin, Illinois, by October 25, 2024, at 4:00 p.m.
Salary Information
Firefighter/Paramedic:
Starting Salary: $70,823.93
Salary increases annually on January 1st
After 1 year: $76,668.51
After 2 years: $81,621.02
After 3 years: $89,358.27
After 4 years: $93,085.58
After 5 years: $98,588.22
Top firefighter/paramedic pay can reach $104,592.25 under the current labor contract.
Firefighter/EMT-Basic or Paramedic (Single Role):
Starting Salary: $63,741.54
After 1 year: $69,001.66
Firefighter/Paramedic certification required within one year of employment.
Benefits Overview
Pension: Fire Pension funded over 75%
Insurance: Medical (HSA funds provided), dental, and vision
Longevity Pay: Based on a percentage of top firefighter/paramedic pay (up to 2%)
Other Benefits: Paid training, clothing allowance, deferred compensation (457 Plan), and college education funding
Sick Leave: Accrued monthly; sick leave buyback available at retirement for up to 1620 hours at one-third of the employee’s current rate
Holiday Time: Six holidays per year, with an option for a buyback in December
Compensatory Time: Earned for overtime worked, capped at 216 hours per year
Kelly Days: Scheduled every 18th duty day for employees assigned to 24-hour shifts
Department Overview
The South Elgin & Countryside Fire Protection District is a progressive emergency service organization that responded to approximately 3,950 incidents in 2023, with a projected increase to 4,000 in 2024. The District serves about 30,000 people across 26 square miles, including South Elgin, Bartlett, Campton Hills, and parts of Elgin, St. Charles, and Plato Townships in Kane and DuPage Counties.
Job Requirements
U.S. Citizenship
Age: Minimum of 21 years old and under 35 at the time of application (copy of birth certificate required)
Education: High school diploma or equivalent
Driver’s License: Valid Illinois driver’s license
Certifications: Basic Operations Firefighter and IDPH Paramedic, or Basic Operations Firefighter and IDPH EMT-Basic, or IDPH Paramedic
CPAT and Ladder Climb Certification: Must be conducted by a licensed agency within the last 12 months prior to application
Vision: Correctable to 20/20
Additional Requirements Upon Conditional Offer:
Must pass psychological, medical, and physical exams
Basic Operations Firefighter and IDPH Paramedic License required within one year of employment
Preference Points
Candidates eligible for preference points (e.g., veterans, educational achievements, or prior experience) must submit documentation to the South Elgin & Countryside Fire Protection District Board of Fire Commissioners within ten days after the posting of the initial eligibility list.
