The Tiffin Police Department is building an ongoing eligibility list for the position of Police Officer. Candidates must complete the FrontLine National Exam through the National Testing Network (NTN).

Candidates are also required to complete the PHQ questionnaire, accessible through their candidate account. It is recommended to complete the PHQ promptly to avoid delays.

Salary Information:
Based on negotiations with the Ohio Police Benevolent Association (OPBA). Starting salary ranges from $25.39 to $32.11 through step increases.

Department Overview:
Established in 1851, the Tiffin Police Department responds to approximately 13,000 – 15,000 service calls annually. Specialized units include Drug Task Force, K9, Special Response Team, Crisis Negotiations Team, Detective Division, SRO, Drone Operator, and Bike Patrol. The department employs 31 full-time sworn personnel and provides officers with state-of-the-art equipment, vehicles, and training. The department is an Ohio Collaborative Certified Agency and utilizes Lexipol for policies and procedures.

Area Information:
The City of Tiffin, located in Seneca County and serving as the county seat, hosts two private universities. It is within driving distance of Lake Erie (50 minutes), Toledo (50 minutes), Cleveland (1 hour and 15 minutes), and Columbus (1 hour and 45 minutes). The city offers an excellent school system, recreational programs, numerous parks, and a developing downtown.

Job Requirements:

Age: 21
Citizenship: Must be a U.S. citizen
Education: High school diploma or GED
Driver’s License: Must have a valid driver’s license or be able to obtain one before hire
English Proficiency: Required
Vision: Must be correctable to 20/20 and no color blindness
College: Preferred, but not required (an associate degree is required for promotion to Sergeant)
Academy Certification: Must have a current OPOTA Peace Officer Certificate or be currently enrolled in a police academy with a letter from the Academy Commander confirming the expected graduation.
Prior Experience: Not required
Veteran’s Preference: Eligible veterans may receive a 20% additional credit on their total examination score, provided they submit military service documentation when applying.
Performance Responsibilities:
Under general supervision, Police Officers are responsible for protecting and serving the public, enforcing laws set by the United States Constitution, the State of Ohio, and the City of Tiffin Charter.

Hiring Process:

Application:

Complete the City of Tiffin employment application and submit it to the Director of Human Resources. Applications are available at the municipal police building or online.
Written Exam:

Complete the NTN exam with a minimum passing score of 70%. Complete the PHQ questionnaire by the closing date.
Physical Agility Exam:

Candidates who pass the written exam will be invited for a fitness-for-duty examination, graded as pass/fail. The test must be completed within the specified time and requires completing specific tasks.
Ranking:

Candidates are ranked based on their written exam score and any military credit.
Certification:

Qualified candidates are placed on an eligible-to-hire list approved by the City’s Civil Service Commission. A top list of candidates is then forwarded to the police department for background interviews/investigations.
Interview/Background Investigations:

Candidates from the top eligibility list will be contacted for an interview and begin the background investigation process. Signed releases are required to proceed.
Post-Interview/Background Steps:

An in-depth background assessment will be conducted for candidates who progress in the process.
Conditional Offer of Employment:

A conditional offer may be issued, contingent upon passing a psychological evaluation or polygraph, medical examination, and drug testing.
Failure to pass any part of the testing process may result in disqualification. Other undesirable qualities, traits, or attributes may also lead to disqualification from the role.
