Hillsboro Police Department is currently hiring entry-level Police Officers. All testing must be completed and shared by 11:59 p.m. on July 28, 2024.

Salary Information: $6,729 – $8,475

Hillsboro Police Department offers Bi-Lingual Pay: Employees who are qualified by the department as bi-lingual in English and Spanish or Japanese, or a language spoken by over ten percent (10%) of City residents as documented by the most recent U.S. Census will receive a monthly premium of five percent (5%) of their regular base pay.

Job Requirements

  • Age 21 at the time of employment.

  • Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license in state of residence.
  • Must have good moral character: moral character is defined as possessing the attributes of empathy, courage, fortitude, honesty, loyalty, and additional virtues deemed to be morally good.
  • Meet all applicable medical and physical requirements.
  • Meet all applicable background, credit, and criminal history checks.
  • Must be able to obtain DPSST basic police certification within 18 months of employment.

Hiring Process:
City of Hillsboro application and National Testing Network Directions

Step 1 – Eligible persons who are qualified and interested in applying for the positions and sign up with www.nationaltestingnetwork.com. Select a Police Officer and sign up for the City of Hillsboro Police Department opening.   NTN testing must be completed and scores released to Hillsboro Police Department by 11:59 pm, July 28, 2024.  The City of Hillsboro/Hillsboro Police Department minimum passing score is Video 65%, Writing 70%, and Reading 70%. Tests taken prior to this position opening must be shared with the department; please contact NTN on how to share prior scores (a fee may be charged for sharing/transferring a prior score) or contact Cindy Tucker at [email protected] if you have any questions about prior NTN test scores. Prior to hiring processes, NTN scores are not automatically transferred to new hiring processes; please reach out to Cindy Tucker with any questions.

Step 2 – Complete a City of Hillsboro/Hillsboro Police Department application, which is located here: https://www.governmentjobs.com/careers/hillsboro. Applicants who have successfully passed the NTN testing will have their application evaluated based on minimum requirements, work experience, training, and skills presented in the employment application and resume.  **Applications and NTN scores will be reviewed at the 4-week point of the job opening and again when the process closes on August 28th.

Step 3 – While applications are being reviewed, those applicants who need to run ORPAT will be invited to run the course with our department.  If an applicant has taken ORPAT and has a passing score of no more than 5:30 within 12 months of March 24, 2024, you will not need to retest. Prior ORPAT scores may be attached to your application. Hillsboro Police Department does accept NTN ORPAT scores; please attach your score to your application.  ORPAT invites will be sent out to everyone who has not provided a score, and information about when and where we are hosting ORPAT will be included in that email invite.

Step 4 – Selected applicants will be invited to participate in the next stages of the selection process, including oral board interviews, extensive background investigations, and Executive Staff interviews. All applicants will be notified in writing of the final status of their application.

Step 5 – Any applicant who receives a conditional offer of employment will be subject to passing a pre-employment physical, drug screen, and psychological evaluation.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Be a United States Citizen by birth or a Naturalized United States Citizen.
  • Or be able to attain citizenship within 18 months of hire OAR 259-008-0010 (1)​.
  • Possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be at least 21 years old by date of hire.
  • Possess and maintain a valid license to operate a motor vehicle.
  • Applicants must be in good health and have good moral character: moral character is defined as possessing the attributes of empathy, courage, fortitude, honesty, loyalty, and additional virtues deemed to be morally good.
  • Meet all applicable medical and physical requirements.
  • Meet all applicable background, credit, and criminal history checks.
  • The criminal history check will include but will be limited to, a review of your conviction arrest records for any violation of OAR 259-008-0010 (4)​, which would make you not eligible to be a certified police officer by Oregon
  • Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST).
    Specific Disqualifiers/Behaviors:

Operation of a Motor Vehicle:

Receipt of two or more moving violations within three years prior to application may be disqualifying, depending on the nature of the violations.

Involvement as a driver in two or more chargeable collisions within three years prior to the date of application shall be disqualifying.

Conviction of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs within three years prior to application shall be disqualifying.

Suspension of a driver’s license once within the past three years shall be disqualifying.

Integrity:

Refusing to yield to the temptation of bribes, gratuities, payoffs, etc.

Refusing to tolerate unethical or illegal conduct on the part of other law enforcement personnel.

Showed strong moral character and integrity when dealing with the public.
Being honest in dealing with the public.

Any material misstatement of fact, significant admission, or omission during the application or background process shall be disqualifying.

Credibility as a Witness in a Court of Law:

Ability to give testimony in a court of law without being subject to impeachment due to his/her character for honesty or integrity or prior to felony conviction(s).

Commission of any act, while employed as a Police Officer involving untruthfulness, falsification of any official report or document, or theft, shall be disqualifying.

All male U.S. citizens and aliens born after 1960 and residing in the United States who are 18 through 25 years of age are REQUIRED to register with the Selective Service.  Failure to have registered may be an automatic disqualifier.
Dependability:

Missing any scheduled appointment during the hiring process without prior permission/notification shall be disqualifying.

Disqualifying is having been disciplined by any employer as an adult for abuse of leave, gross insubordination, dereliction of duty, or persistent failure to follow established policies and regulations.

Having been involuntarily dismissed for reasons other than lay-offs from two or more employers as an adult shall be disqualifying.

Illegal Use or Possession of Drugs:

The following types of illegal drug use or possession will be considered automatic disqualification in the pre-employment selection process for police personnel, with no exceptions:

Any adult use or possession of a drug classified as a hallucinogenic within five years prior to application for employment shall be disqualifying.

Any other illegal drug use within the last five years shall be disqualifying.
