The City of Avondale is currently recruiting for Police Officers.  All candidates must complete the FrontLine National Exam with National Testing Network by 07/02/2024 to be considered for this position.

Candidates must complete the City of Avondale employment application at www.avondaleaz.gov by 06/25/2024.

Salary: $29.13 – $45.41 Hourly

What is the Application Process?

  • Take a Written Exam (approximately 3.5 hours)
  • You will receive an email with instructions on how to take your written exam after submitting an application.
  • Important: If you have taken the NTN Police Officer Written Exam within the last twelve (12) months (since 06/18/2023) and “passed” (the minimum acceptable written exam scores are Reading 70, Writing 70), you must submit your written exam results to the City of Avondale Police Officer Job Opportunity on the NTN.
  • FYI: The National Testing Network (NTN) offers an online practice written exam for $24.95.
  • Submit a Background Packet
  • Please complete the Avondale Police Department Applicant Background Questionnaire, which will be sent to you by email.
  • Complete the AZPOST Personal History Questionnaire on the following link: my.azpost.gov [my.azpost.gov], and share your ID # with the Avondale Police Department. The Authorization for Release of Information must be downloaded and notarized by a Notary Public and turned over to the Avondale Police Department.
  • Attend an Oral Board: The Avondale Police Department will schedule oral boards by invitation for applicants who pass the written exam. Oral board appointments will be scheduled via telephone call.
  • Applicants must be able to pass a physical agility test. The Avondale Police Department will schedule the physical fitness exam on a date to be determined. The Avondale Police Department uses the Police Officer Physical Aptitude Test (POPAT). https://post.az.gov/popat
  • All applicants must complete a liability waiver before participating in the physical agility evaluation. The physical evaluation consists of the following:
  • 99-yard obstacle course
  • Run a 99-yard obstacle course consisting of several sharp turns, a number of curb height obstacles, and a 34-inch high obstacle that must be vaulted.
  • Body Drag
  • Lift and drag 165-pound, lifelike dummy 32 feet
  • 6-foot chain link fence
  • Run five yards to a six-foot, chain-link fence, climb over the fence, and continue running another 25 yards.
  • 6-foot solid fence climb
  • Run five yards to a six-foot solid fence, climb over the fence, and continue running another 25 yards.
  • 500-yard run
  • Run 500 yards (equivalent to one lap plus 60 yards of a standard running track).
  • Important Physical Fitness Test Instructions: Bring your own water and wear proper clothing, such as running shoes, socks, t-shirt, shorts, etc. Avoid jewelry, glasses, and hats. Casual observers are not allowed to enter the testing area. MP3 players, iPods, or other music devices are not allowed during the physical agility test. No entry will be allowed to the physical agility test without a photo ID.

The best-qualified applicants will be selected to attend the Phoenix Regional Police Academy (PRPA) or another Arizona-accredited Police Academy of the Avondale Police Department’s choosing as Avondale Police Recruits. Upon successfully completing an academy, the Field Training Officer phase begins.

Job Requirements

DESCRIPTION: The City of Avondale is looking for career-oriented applicants who desire to be a Police Officer for the City of Avondale. The successful candidates must be individuals who share the values of the Avondale Police  Department. They must display the highest levels of integrity and ethical standards and be oriented with high maturity and personal responsibility. Applicants must display cultural awareness and sensitivity. This position requires personal dedication to Community Policing Concepts and how it applies to the community.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :

Patrols designated areas and responds to calls for service by the public. Investigates crimes and crime scenes. Writes reports, testifies in court, trains, and supervises as required.

Responds to calls for service by contacting complainants and suspects, conducting investigations, gathering information, completing interviews, documenting facts, making arrests when necessary, and writing reports.

Patrol designated areas by operating the patrol vehicle/motorcycle, walking, observing, watching for traffic violators, and providing customer service.

Conducts crime investigations by locating physical evidence, victims, witnesses, and suspects, gathering statements, investigating the crime scene, coming to a conclusion about the crime, and making arrests when necessary.

Performs other duties as assigned by testifying in court, holding training sessions, acting as detention/booking officer, assisting other bureaus, serving warrants, and conducting supervisory tasks.

JOB REQUIREMENTS :

A High School diploma or equivalency is preferred. Existing knowledge of the use of force, application of criminal and constitutional law, and current tactics used in law enforcement is preferred.

Must be 21 years of age by Police Academy (20 weeks) graduation. Valid Arizona Operator’s Driver License by the time of hire. Must be a United States citizen. No previous experience is required.

Successful completion of an Arizona Police Academy and Arizona Police Officers Standards and Training (AZ POST) Certification.

Above-average physical conditioning: includes running, climbing, crawling, and possessing the ability to pass and maintain an entry-level officer’s physical fitness requirements.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION: All offers are contingent upon successfully passing a pre-employment background, which will be conducted and/or coordinated by the Avondale Police Department and includes a background investigation, polygraph, medical exam, and psychological examination at the expense of the City of Avondale. AUTOMATIC DISQUALIFIERS: The Avondale Police Department and/or AZPOST will automatically disqualify any individual who has/is:

  • Been dishonorably discharged from the United States Armed Forces
  • Have you been convicted of a felony or any offense that would be a felony if committed in Arizona
  • Not a U.S. citizen
  • Legally or illegally used marijuana for any purpose within the past two years.
  • Illegally used dangerous drugs or narcotics other than for experimentation.
  • The use of an illegal drug is presumed NOT to be for experimentation if:
  • The use of dangerous drugs or narcotics, other than marijuana, exceeds a total of 5 times or exceeds one time since the age of 21
  • Illegally sold, produced, cultivated, or transported for sale any dangerous drugs or narcotics other than marijuana
  • Illegally used dangerous drugs or narcotics, other than marijuana, for any purpose within the past seven years. Examples include: cocaine, crack, methamphetamine (crystal meth or speed of any kind), and anabolic steroids, except prescriptions only, or FDA-approved over-the-counter preparations.
  • Had a pattern of abusing prescription medications
  • Been convicted or adjudged to have violated traffic regulations governing the movement of vehicles with such a frequency so as to indicate disrespect for traffic laws and a disregard for the safety of other persons on the highway within the past three years
  • Had your Arizona Driver’s License suspended as a result of excessive traffic violations or any other act that would automatically suspend your license, or received a suspected license from any other state as a result of similar circumstances
  • Have you been convicted of any crime under a domestic violence statute
  • Lied during any stage of the hiring process
  • Falsified the background questionnaire or application
