All qualified candidates must take the FrontLine National test and have a valid passing ORPAT. Candidates must also complete a City of Redmond Law Enforcement application through NeoGov found at https://www.governmentjobs.com/careers/RedmondOR. Applicants are responsible for contacting NTN and arranging for their testing.

Out of state applicants without a valid ORPAT score will be required to pass the ORPAT as a condition of their employment.

NTN testing and the department application must be completed.

Note: Lateral officers are not required to complete NTN testing but will be required to have a passing ORPAT score as a condition of their employment.

Salary Information: $6,150-$8,655 (With Certificate Pay, FLSA, and Overtime the average RPD officer earns +/- $90,000 annually)

Must be 21 years or older at the time of employment; must possess, or have ability to obtain within thirty (30) days from date of hire, a valid Oregon driver’s license without record of suspension or revocation in any state; felony convictions and disqualifying criminal histories within the past seven (7) years are not allowed; must have no history of illegal drug use (no use of marijuana in past five (5) years); must be a United States citizen within eighteen (18) months from date of hire; must be able to read and write the English language; must be of good moral character and pass a thorough background investigation. Out of state certifications must meet reciprocity requirements for Oregon police certifications.

High school diploma, or equivalent, supplemented by a two-year community college degree or vocational school training in police science, law enforcement, criminal justice administration, public administration, or a related field or an equivalent combination of military, education, and experience.

Ability to learn the applicable laws, ordinances, and department rules and regulations; to perform work requiring good physical condition; to communicate effectively orally and in writing; to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, peers and supervisors; to exercise sound judgment in evaluating situations and in making decisions; to follow verbal and written instructions; to meet the special requirements listed below; to learn the City’s geography; to meet Department’s physical standards.

Special Requirements or Licenses:

The position requires employees to operate a motor vehicle during their position. Possession of, or must obtain within thirty (30) days from the date of hire, a valid Oregon driver’s license, without record of suspension or revocation in any State; must possess a safe driving record.

Selected candidate must pass a thorough background investigation, physical and psychological examination.

Possession of, or ability to acquire, a Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) basic certificate within one year.

Officers already certified as police officers through DPSST or another state’s equivalent would be hired as lateral officers.

Entry-level/Basic Officers must have completed the National Testing Network Frontline test within the last twelve (12) months.

All Officers must complete the Oregon Physical Abilities Test (ORPAT) and attach it to their account through the National Testing Network, also completed within the last twelve (12) months. The time to successfully pass the ORPAT is 5:30. If you have a valid and current ORPAT test from another agency or PAT test from another state, you may submit it along with your City application.

Desirable Requirements:

For desirable requirements to be considered, one must have met the minimum requirements noted above:

A Bachelor’s Degree in police science, law enforcement, criminal justice administration, public administration, social science, or related field or an equivalent combination of military, education, and experience. Some knowledge of modern law enforcement principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment. Skill in operating the tools and equipment listed. Basic emergency first aid. Proficiency with both English/Spanish languages is a plus.

Hiring Process:

Working Conditions :

Works on rotating shifts (4 on/4 off) performing security patrols, traffic control, investigation, and first aid at accidents, detection, investigation, and arrest of persons involved in crimes or misconduct.

Works an assigned shift using one’s judgment in deciding the course of action, being expected to handle difficult emergencies without assistance.
Maintains normal availability by radio or telephone for consultation on major emergencies or precedents.

Carries duties conforming to Federal, State, County, and City laws and ordinances.

Patrols City streets, parks, and commercial and residential areas to preserve the peace and enforce the law, control vehicular traffic, prevent or detect and investigate misconduct involving misdemeanors, felonies, and other law violations, and otherwise serve and protect.

Responds to emergency radio calls and investigates accidents, robberies, civil disturbances, domestic disputes, fights, drunkenness, missing children prowlers, abuse of drugs, etc.

Takes appropriate law enforcement action.
Interrogates suspects, witnesses, and drivers.
Preserves evidence.
Arrests violators.
Investigates and renders assistance at scene of vehicular accidents.
Summons ambulances and other law enforcement vehicles.
Takes measurements and draws diagrams of the scene.
Conducts follow-up investigations of crimes committed during the assigned shift.
Seeks out and questions victims, witnesses, and suspects.
Develops leads and tips.
Searches scenes of crimes for evidence.
Analyzes and evaluates evidence and arrests offenders.
Prepares cases for giving testimony and testifies in court proceedings.
Prepares various reports and records, including officer’s Daily Log, reports of investigation, field interrogation report, alcohol reports, influence reports, Intoxilyzer checklist, bad check form, vehicle impoundment form, traffic hazard report, etc.
Undertakes community-oriented police work, and assists citizens with such matters as stalled vehicles, crime prevention, traffic safety; works with members of the community to find innovative and non-traditional ways to solve community issues and problems.
Participates in investigating criminal law violations occurring within the city limits, obtaining evidence and compiling information regarding these crimes, preparing cases for filing of charges, testifying in court, and related activities.
Conducts patrol activities, including directing traffic, investigating reported or observed law violations, and conducting patrol activities.
Coordinates activities with other officers or City departments as needed, exchanges information with officers in other law enforcement agencies, and obtains advice from the City Attorney, District Attorney, Court Administrator, Circuit Court and Justice Court Office regarding cases, policies, and procedures, as needed and assigned.
Maintains contact with police supervisory personnel to coordinate investigation activities, provide mutual assistance during emergencies, and provide general information about Department activities.
