Salary Information: A Police Recruit receives $40.47 an hour while attending the 26-week San Jose Police Department Academy. Upon graduation, the annual base pay range for Police Officers is $98,051.00 to $152,122.57 *(effective 7/20/2019) (seven annual steps); police officers receive an annual uniform allowance of $675.00. Bilingual pay is offered at 2.5% of top step officer base salary.

Job Requirements:
Age: At least 20 1/2 years old at the time of application.

Citizenship Required: Yes, or a permanent resident alien who has applied for citizenship.

U.S. High School Grad/High School Equivalency Exam: Yes; waived if you obtained a college degree from an accredited college within the U.S.

Driver’s License: Any U.S. driver’s license.

Vision: Must have at least 20/40 corrected vision.

College: Forty (40) semester college credits or sixty (60) quarter college credits from a U.S.-accredited college or university. Police academy credits are accepted as part of the education requirement.

Military Veterans with an honorable discharge can substitute four (4) years of service in the U.S. Air Force, Army, Navy, Marines, or Coast Guard instead of the minimum college credit requirement.

Prior Experience: No experience or training required.

Specific Disqualifiers/Behaviors: No felony, domestic violence, or misdemeanor assault convictions; cannot currently be on probation or parole.
