Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the qualifying knowledge and abilities may be qualifying. A typical way to obtain these qualifications would be:

PUBLIC SAFETY DISPATCHER I (Range 680)

$54,156 – $70,888 per year

Salary may be negotiable within the range listed above, based on the position requirements and the successful candidate’s qualifications, subject to appropriate authorization.

Training and Experience:
Any combination of training and experience that provides the above-listed knowledge, skills, and abilities may be qualifying.

A typical way of qualifying would be:

  • This is equivalent to graduation from high school and one (1) year of employment that has included regular contact with the public.
  • Typing speed 35 wpm
  • Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD) Certification is desirable and must be obtained within one year.

Other Requirements

  • Must be able to pass a background investigation
  • Must be willing to work evening, night, weekend, and holiday shifts on a rotation basis
  • Must be willing to be called back or held over to maintain minimum staffing levels
  • Must obtain Post Basic Dispatcher and Department of Justice CLETS/CJIS operator certifications prior to completion of probation as a Public Safety Dispatcher I
  • Upon a conditional offer of employment, selected candidate(s) will be required to pass a physical and psychological evaluation.

To be considered for this opportunity, all candidates must take the ECOMM National exam administered by the National Testing Network (www.nationaltestingnetwork.com). The Tests must have been completed within six months of submitting your application to the City.

~ THE SELECTION PROCESS ~

1.  Take the ECOMM National Exam with National Testing Network.  Scores are automatically sent to Human Resources for review.

2.  Submit your application to the City via the link in the top right-hand corner.

3.  You will also need a typing certification with a minimum of 35 net words per minute.

The City will honor an acceptable typing certificate dated within the last year from the following agencies: state, federal, and municipal agencies; temp agencies; business schools or colleges; adult education centers; skills and business education centers. If you are unable to obtain a typing certification on your own, please contact Human Resources for available alternatives. The typing test offered through NTN will not be accepted as part of this requirement.

BACKGROUND DISQUALIFIERS:

  • An adult felony conviction in California or with a conviction for an offense in another state which would be classified as a felony in California
  • Currently on Probation or Parole
  • Adult felony and/or misdemeanor conviction(s) may be disqualifying depending on the type, number, severity, and how recent.
  • Conviction of/or sustained petitions for any sex crime
  • Recent use and/or possession of illegal drugs, weapons, or explosive devices without legal authorization
  • History of committing domestic violence or animal cruelty
  • Dishonesty or failure to reveal pertinent information
